This morning in a Manhattan federal courtroom, two of Chris Christie’s “loyal lieutenants” were taken down by Section 666 of Title 18 of the United States Code. Bill Baroni and Bridget Anne Kelly were convicted on all charges for their roles in Bridgegate and could each theoretically face 20 years in prison (although nothing close to that will be imposed).
…assistant U.S. attorney Lee Cortes, in his summations to the jury, said Baroni, Kelly and [prosecution witness David] Wildstein all saw themselves as the governor’s “loyal lieutenants” who were free to use their public jobs to launch political attacks.
“They used their positions at the Port Authority and in the governor’s office to execute a malicious scheme to punish a local mayor by needlessly leading innocent travelers, adults and children who were pawns in a political game into a paralyzing traffic jam that went on for days,” he said. “They stopped people from moving freely about their community for no legitimate reason…just to mess with people, so they could send a clear and nasty political message. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is what makes this a federal crime.”
Bridget Anne Kelly, a single mother of four and Christie’s former deputy chief of staff, is going to the hoosegow because her own “time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee” email to Wildstein convicted her. She couldn’t provide an explanation for why she texted Wildstein after he informed her that the bridge lanes were closed: “Is it wrong that I am smiling?”
Inside and outside the courthouse she was visibly distraught:
Kelly cried and continued to sob as she heard the word guilty repeated time and again. Neither defendant stood as the verdicts were read.
Afterward, Kelly hugged her attorney and her mother…
…Moments later, outside the federal courthouse, Critchley said his client “was a scapegoat” but he refused to answer any questions regarding Christie. Kelly, who did not speak, stood beside Critchley and appeared to be visibly quaking.
An interesting aspect of this case is that both the prosecution and the defense agreed that Governor Chris Christie had authorized the lane closures, been kept abreast of progress, and had lied to everyone about his foreknowledge and knowledge as the traffic jams went on for days.
But if Christie is feeling remorse about his underlings being convicted in federal court, there are no signs of it:
Christie’s office released a statement less than an hour after the verdict.
“Like so many people in New Jersey, I’m saddened by this case and I’m saddened about the choices made by Bill Baroni, Bridget Kelly and David Wildstein,” Christie said. “Today’s verdict does not change this for me.”
The governor’s statement went on to reiterate that “I had no knowledge prior to or during these lane realignments.”
In truth, everything about that statement has either been disproved in federal court or is contradicted by common sense. You can’t even credibly express sadness when you’re nakedly in front of the world letting a single mother of four go to federal prison because you won’t cop to what you did.
Bill Baroni’s lawyer said it best:
Baroni’s attorney, Michael Baldassare, said “it was a disgrace” that the U.S. Attorney’s office did not charge “powerful people.”
“In keeping with the disgrace that was this trial, one of the things the U.S. Attorney’s Office should be ashamed of is where it decided to draw the line on who to charge and who not to charge,” Baldassare said. “… They should have had belief in their own case to charge powerful people, and they did not.”
In other words, “my client may be guilty but he’s a scapegoat here. The real guilty party is Governor Chris Christie, and he should have been charged.”
The prosecutor doesn’t necessarily disagree:
U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman praised the outcome and said he was “enormously proud” of his staff, members of the FBI and Office of Inspector General.
Pressed by reporters on why others, including Christie, were not charged, Fishman said he never says which cases he will or will not bring.
Speaking of being “proud of the FBI,” is seems like our Justice system has a lot to say about who they think should be the next president. The election ends in four days. The American people should know if U.S. Attorney Paul Fishman plans to indict the man who is going to head up Donald Trump’s transition plan.
As for Trump, will he promise not to pardon Kelly, Baroni and, if necessary, his transition man?
Wow!!!
They won’t even charge Chris Christie!!!
And he’s small potatoes compared to HRC.
Imagine the Deep State buffers she has working for her!!!
AG
What makes you think they’re not going to charge Christie? It’s pretty clear the opposite is true.
I would imagine that a cooperative witness could receive a lenient sentencing recommendation from the states attorney.
I bet Kelly is desperate to cut a deal right about now.
.
This was my thought as well when I heard that news of the guilty verdicts. It makes sense that as a defendant, you take your chances with the trial and hope for an acquittal. If found guilty, then you cut a deal with the Prosecution to accept a lesser sentencing in exchange for testifying against Christie.
I don’t know anything about Federal Law, but I’m curious if these charges could fall under under RICO law.
Seeing Chris Christie indicted and convicted would be such a fitting end to his terrible reign over New Jersey, and also a vindication for the NY and Philly fans who watched that jackass fawning over Jerry Jones in the Dallas Cowboys’ owner suite.
Did you know an election is occurring? If so, you might want to keep up with current events. Seems like the deep state, particularly law enforcement in the FBI, working with Rudy Giuliani, is actively seeking to undermine one candidate for this election. Mr. Giuliani said so today basically. Oh, and some of their evidence appears to be right wing nuttery taken from solid evidentiary sources like Breitbart, if reporting is accurate. Not to mention, the candidate who they don’t like has had her campaign hacked.
No biggie though. Anything to stop that horrible Clinton, right?
The other Deep State.
Not this one.
They’re at war now.
AG
And I always thought Obama was fortunate in his opponents. Clinton’s got him beat. “Garglebargle coup! Establishment politician is part of the establishment! Furginwobbly countermoop! The Clintons seized control of my thinking-lobes with Huma’s sexy eyebrows!”
What I wouldn’t give to see an intelligent right-winger in opposition of the Democrats. I guess there’s no reason for intelligent right-wingers to oppose us. Which is a problem for many reason. But also because we’re left with only the word-blurting goofs in opposition, and the evidence that anyone who’s passionately against our current path is a chucklefucker.
Alan Keyes? Doesn’t get any more fortunate than that.
Seems like a nice enough guy. A little whacky maybe, but nice.
Look him up online.
Alt. Right Deep State.
Bet on it.
It’s the Alt. Right Deep State…the one that HRC called “a vast right wing conspiracy” long ago and far away…vs. the (relatively new) globalist/centrist/corporatist Deep State now in power.
There is no “progressive”…or even “liberal”…Deep State, though.
Too nice.
Too polite for alla that skull-thuggery.
That’s probably why we ALWAYS COME IN LAST!!!
Get used to it.

I’m confused…are you saying the the Permagov has now become the Deep State, but that there are actually 2 conflicting Deep States? Can you please supply a flow chart for your conspiracy theories?
just did?
You just invited AG to put on his best Glenn Beck impression.
What were you thinking?
Sure.
Read the aggregated news from Google News and Drudge Report. Day to day, that “flow”should be quite plain to see for anyone who is not totally hypnotized by centrist media.
What is not plain to see…yet…is which side will prevail. Even after the (
s)election the two rivals for control of the PermaGov will keep chipping and chopping at one another, probably right on through the first several years of whoever actually wins. If the centrist Dems win the presidency but the Alt. Right keeps control of Congress, DC will be Impeachment City. If the centrist Dems win the whole boondoggle, the U.S. will be so busy making war on our…their…”enemies” that there won’t be much left to talk about. If some sort of stalemate arises then we’ll just have another 4 to 8 years of useless infighting and stagnant governance. And the competition will continue. If the Alt. Right takes the whole cake? (Could happen…) Then things will change and change rapidly. For the better? I think not. Probably blood in the streets before a year passes.
Trust neither side. They are all liars. Parse all the lies and what is not covered is probably the only truth that you are likely to get in this ongoing fiasco.

Would be interesting to know if Fishman offered either of them a deal. Would guess that its often a tough call when a prosecutor has two birds in hand and could lose them it she/he let’s them go to possibly get a bigger bird.
Also remember that but for this trial and scandal, and an intervention of his own advisor faking plane trouble, Chris Christie would be the VP nominee.
what was the intervention faking plane trouble?
Report: Manafort Faked Plane Problem to Get Trump to Avoid Picking Christie for VP
very interesting, thanks.
If not for the caper or their sloppy handling of it, Christie would have been a real contender for the GOP POTUS nomination. Many people, myself included, viewed him in 2013 as the strongest GOP horse. Would have stolen the thunder that DJT was able to capture and if strong enough before June 2015, DJT may never have run at all.
Perhaps Madame President could be magnanimous and commute Kelly’s sentence. In consideration of her four children, of course.
Christie would not have stood up to national scrutiny even without the GW Bridge incident. There were/ are all kinds of things waiting to surface, pretty well-known around here.
Didn’t handicap Trump in the GOP primaries and compared to Christe, his all kinds of things are yuuge in comparison with those a piker like Christie has been involved in. wrt the general election, why wouldn’t Christie been able withstand national scrutiny better than Trump has? Assuming he has the same opponent.
And if Christie’s all kinds of things are so well-known around here how did he manage to get 60.3% of the vote in his 2013 re-election? The tough-guy, bully style trumps all kinds of things with a very high percentage of voters.
The actual lane closures happened in August 2013. Christie’s aides’ role (and the now-near-certainty of Christie’s own knowledge and approval) did not become common knowledge until after that re-election.
No chance that would happen now. Even Jersey folks have their limits of tolerance.
one piece of good news, I hope, Denise seems to be competitive? any thoughts?
Had her down 13 and almost 20, IIRC. Reporting hints at issues with both, though (worse one no likely-voter screen, again IIRC). Plus hints that campaigns’ internal polling suggests much closer, hence lots of money/ads being poured in from both sides.
Still seems a long shot to me (always has), but one can still hope. Until one no longer can.
thanks for update. hoping.
I discussed that several times but no one pays any attention to what I write.
wrt #1 — General Election Day in the US is set by law. Christie had no power to change it and it was in fact held on 11/5/13. He did play a game with the Senate special election. Turnout was down by 173 thousand compared with 2009, but Christie received 105 thousand more votes in 2013 than he had in 2009. So, explanation #1 doesn’t hold up.
#2 — Valid. From why out west, Buono appeared to be a decent enough candidate, but as you say, some powerful NJ Democrats turned on her and national Democratic politicians and money didn’t find it worth the effort to fill in the gap.
#3 — He probably picked up most of Daggett;s (I) 5.8% vote share from ’09.
#4 — four years of Christie wasn’t enough for NJ voters?
Overall, what you’re saying is that the NJ Democratic Party pretty much stinks, and that’s true in many states which explains why nationwide GOP governors and legislatures far outnumber the Democratic ones. And why the House and quite possibly the Senate won’t flip this year.
well, no I didn’t say that about the NJ dem party. thanks for using your imagination.
Is there an alternative interpretation to “NJ dems collaborated by NO advertising for Buono?” CA turnout for the 2014 gubernatorial election was way down from that of 2010 — 7.3 million v. 9.6 million — typical when an incumbent governor is running for re-election. Compared to CA, NJ’s 2013 turnout was robust.
You do the crime, you pay the price IMO.
Chrisite passed his use by date a long time ago, like the Big Dog.
Bloomberg – Christie Was a `Puppeteer’ Who Knew All, Says Bridgegate Juror. Fishman could be kicking himself for not including Christie as a co-conspirator. Could have gotten three instead of two notches on his belt.
