The three-hour electric prescription for your funky ills.
Someone just wrote a whole book about this show which is now a historic recording in the Library of Congress. I think Ithaca still observes May 8th as a holiday and has some kind of commemoration each year.
Most people know the Betty Board recording (available here) off the soundboard, but this YouTube seems to be a fairly good quality audience tape, so plenty of crowd noise and clapping. A different way of listening to something that might be as familiar as an old winter coat.
Trivia: it snowed during the show even though it was May.
Just got back from a pre-Christmas get together with some liberals horrified with our current state of political being — right here in South Carolina. So it’s good to meet others in the area to know you’re not alone 🙂
In fact one of the people said how moving down here made him “liberal” when he thought of himself as moderate. Seeing the difference in state provided services etc. There is still hope.
My TDK SA-90 of this show was loved to death in a car cassette deck and I never got the Dicks Picks on I-tunes. Early X-mas presents to yourself are the best thing ever… 🙂
that is one killer show. I sent it to Sam.
That “Dancin'” jam, holy shit. i’m at the 6:30 mark and it’s fucking insane.
Words like holy shit and fucking insane only work on the terrestrial plane, but that jam is on the astral plane.
And a mere precursor for the greatest triumph of their career with is the jam between Scarlet and Fire.
Indeed. this is amazing
By some divine coincidence I am in Ithaca now., Booman. The two people with whom I am staying…my son and his wife…have been here almost 6 years (living right off the Commons in downtown Ithaca and working/going to school at Cornell) have never even heard of “Grateful Dead Day” and they’re the kinds of hip grad students who would know.
Just sayin’…

One of the first bootlegs I owned. Found it in a little head shop out here in W. PA. Some head co-workers had introduced the show to me, going nuts over Phil’s bass in Scarlet Begonias. Still gives me chills.
Long live the Dead!
