Left of center and lover of photography, music, pop culture, and life.
Favorite quote - "There are no innocents. There are, however, different degrees of responsibility" (Lisbeth Salander, from Stieg Larsson's original Millennium Trilogy).
I remember this song when it first came out. We didn’t get cable, but there were some knock-off MTV-like shows on the UHF stations that played this video heavily. Then again, I got hooked on SNL during season 4, when Devo made its big appearance (their performance of “Satisfaction” is still a personal favorite), and got hooked on Devo and their ethos pretty much immediately. And I agree – their work has held up quite well.
Devo’s re-imagining of “Satisfaction” didn’t catch my liking right away, but it didn’t take long. Besides being interesting musically, it also took the piss out of one of the most successful rock groups in the world, which was a worthwhile thing to do.
Hat tip to Lawyers, Guns, and Money. Many people don’t realize e was an amazing guitar player, and was in fact a member of the ‘wrecking crew’.
Campbell suffered from Alzheimer’s in the last years of his life. There is an excellent documentary on Netflix about his last tour, a farewell before he forgot how to do it.
Lodger was my first Bowie album. This was the lead track. Nuclear war was certainly an undercurrent in the lyrics. Oddly enough, Bowie wasn’t too keen on performing it live until later in his career. Apparently the Iraq War and its aftermath gave the song a sense of renewed urgency, so Bowie began to add it to his playlist.
Just discovered that my wife took a college class which was instructed by Tom Lehrer. She tells me Lehrer never referenced his music at all during that semester.
Near the conclusion to the movie “Seeking A Friend for the End Of The World”, the lead character spends a valuable part of the last hours of life on Earth listening to the records which had been left by the love of his life at his house. This was one of them:
Totally knocked me out while sitting there in the theatre.
Here’s a favorite album from a band whose name is on the post subject, anyway:
The first song was a local hit, but there’s a bunch of keepers on this one.
A video which caught my attention when it was on MTV rotation:
God, the very end…dark.
DEVO’s musical, visual and moral concepts age extremely well.

This is a genuinely exciting performance:
With a cameo by Tony Wilson.
Glen Campbell has died.

An excellent track from my favorite Ultravox LP:

Thanks for the lounge, DD. I might just stay a while.
By all means, please do. If you have some videos you’d like to post, feel free!
