This is odd. The New York Times is reporting that the president is suddenly preoccupied with Mike Pence:
In recent weeks, with his electoral prospects two years from now much on his mind, Mr. Trump has focused on the person who has most publicly tethered his fortunes to him. In one conversation after another he has asked aides and advisers a pointed question: Is Mike Pence loyal?
Mr. Trump has repeated the question so many times that he has alarmed some of his advisers. The president has not openly suggested dropping Mr. Pence from the ticket and picking another running mate, but the advisers say those kinds of questions usually indicate that he has grown irritated with someone.
I can envision an almost infinite number of reasons someone might find Mike Pence irritating but it’s curious why this is cropping up now. Obviously, Trump always has the option of choosing a different running mate for 2020 if he gets that far and sees some advantage in it, but I somehow doubt that this is the reason he’s obsessed with the loyalty question.
The article mentions that Trump is seriously considering replacing his own chief of staff with Nick Ayers, who currently has the position with the vice-president, so perhaps this is his weird way of vetting Ayers. That’s one possibility.
Another possibility is that Trump is worried about whether he’ll survive whatever is coming from Robert Mueller and wants to know if Pence might be inclined to give him a quick shove out the door if the opportunity presents itself. It would not shock me, actually, if there is a pro-Pence cabal forming in the aftermath of the midterm elections, so this is perhaps not that far-fetched.
Based on Trump’s recent obsession with the Mueller probe, I believe he has some inside knowledge about what is about to go down, so I am leaning towards this as the likeliest explanation.
There is one other scenario that could be in play here, but I find it doubtful. Trump could be worried that Pence is giving information to Mueller’s investigators or that he will contradict him after he provides his written answers to the Special Counsel’s inquiries. In this case, he could be concerned primarily about what kind of lies he can safely tell.
Whatever the explanation, it does seem to indicate that paranoia is beginning to take a grip on Trump, although it’s not paranoia if Pence is actually angling for his job. On that front, I think he probably is, although he also knows that the base supports Trump and will punish him if he’s seen as working to usurp him.
I have a Christian Right guy in the family, and I assure you the Christian Right really really loves Mike Pence. They needed some persuasion to warm up to Trump.
My guess is that he wants Pence to pardon him if he’s forced to resign.
And I have no doubt that, if it came down to that, Pence would pardon him.
Didn’t Ford pardon of Nixon pretty much seal his fate? Is Pence that stupid?
Yes, and probably.
Ford still became president. That probably doesn’t seem like a terrible fate to Mike Pence.
Pence will surely pardon Trump, but not till after the election. What the Republicans learned from Ford is that one should not pardon the crooks two months prior to an election.
That is wrong with respect to election/pardon dates. I misremembered.
My point is that they pardon crooks early in the presidency to give time for people to forget.
Ford was a sad case in many ways.
Trump wants to know if Pence is loyal? Hell, I can answer that. Fuck no! This is the Republican party and it’s every man for himself (and women need not apply). Moreover, we’re talking about Mike Pence — a guy who came to power not through great intellectual acumen but rather because he knew how to say and do whatever needed to be said and done while looking like a choirboy to the kind of folks to whom he appeals.
Really, Donald? For once in your life, just when deep cynicism is warranted, it fails you? WTF???
I predict that Nikki Haley will be the last man standing after the clowns have exited stage Right.
Warning: Attempting to think like Donald Trump may cause permanent brain damage.
I always find “Why did Trump…” articles questionable because I doubt the writer is really grasping Trump’s motivation and understanding of the issue. And I don’t really want them to do so. Like your mom’s old joke about making faces, they might get stuck that way.
Didn’t the barf-inducing Pence chair the transition team?
He’s implicated (if not yet a subject of investigation, as far as we know).
‘Cuz playing Game of Thrones is much more interesting than actual preznidentin’! That’s bor–ring!
These two rats-in-a-sack deserve each other. Each equally demented in their own special way.
I always thought that Pence…or his subordinates at his order…provided many of the “leaks” that most damaged Trump’s image.
Why?
Who knows.
Maybe he’s even serious about his Christian values…at least as far as he understands them. Maybe Trump’s vicious licentiousness so turns his stomach hat he has waited…and plotted…to get rid of him.
Or…maybe he’s just another political climber.
Like I said…who knows?
Maybe even Pence doesn’t know.
If you administered the CIA’s recently reported attempt (after decades) at a real truth serum to any and all of the political climbers of both parties in Washingtoonville DC, I would bet that would all plead “innocent” of evil actions.
Betcha.
Same as Stalin.
Same as Mao.
Same as Hitler.
Same as Al Capone.
But…history is written by the winners.
We shall see who is “right.”
By the very definition of the idea that “history is written by the winners,” the last thief standing is usually anointed the good guy.
So it goes.
Pray that it’s not Trump.
AG
Trump thinks he can fire the Vice President.
He kind of can, by dropping him from his 2020 ticket. Ford did that to Rockefeller even neither of them were elected in the first place and Dole not never got to serve as veep.
But Pence would still be Vice President for the next 2 years.
I am guessing the acting AG told Trump what the VP told Muller.
Trump lives, dies, and rules, by gossip.
Maybe someone finally explained to him the
Atlantic article that seems to me to capture Mike Pence completely.
In many ways, Pence would be even worse than Trump because he really believes his directives/authority come directly from God. And he’s VERY ambitious; Trump has a right to be concerned.
A Pence admin would be disastrous. DT hardly does anything but tweet most of the time. I want him right where he is for the balance of his term.
He has no loyalty or honesty so he can’t conceive of anyone who does?
He probably just discovered that Pence is the one person in the White House he can’t fire.
There’s been a pro-Pence cabal from the start of his presidency. The RoguePotusStaff twitter account was pretty clearly run by a pro-Pence group of conservative Republicans hoping that Trump would be impeached, leaving their favorite in control.
he could be concerned primarily about what kind of lies he can safely tell….
This sums up his entire life, especially now.
It’s his paranoia. It has been getting more obvious since the world (UN) laughed out loud. It was so bad he was unable to drag him self out of the bed and lay a wreath on Vet day.
Et tu Brute?
