The president committed crimes and it’s the Republicans’ turn to say this doesn’t matter. It will grow increasingly painful to maintain that position. Campaign finance violations to cover up infidelity is the least of it, and yet that’s already painful enough.

These loathsome jackasses find themselves in a corner they’ve painted themselves into and they deserve whatever they get (and more). Not that I’d want to be in their shoes. Those in the reddest districts can look forward to maintaining office in a state of relative powerlessness as this unfolds. Everyone else can kiss their offices goodbye.
From the political side it’s often noted that the Rep’s will stay with Trump because he will get their agenda passed.
Yet Bills passed in the almost 2 year tenure have been dismal, Executive Orders have done nothing but cause Rep to spend their days defending only to see Federal judges overturn. Yes Trump installed 2 Supremes and that’s important, but now it’s done and the Federal bench is stagnating.
If the Rep’s were to count the days that they’ve actually been able to legislate it would become indefensible to argue Trump has helped the cause.
So they’re at a point where the majority of voters dismissed their agendas in November and it can only go downhill from here. There’s much the Senate could do if they were to align with the Dem Congress to get passed. Whether they will realize the alternative of just letting Trump obstruct going forward won’t win any of them re election is another question.
I’m not sure that’s really the source of the support. It might be that they are afraid of the hate mail Trump can generate, with just a tweet.
It must be brutal.

“The last thing I want is help from Russia on a campaign,” the President is reported as having said here.
TRUMP LITERALLY ASKED RUSSIA TO HELP HIS CAMPAIGN, IN PUBLIC.
This President and his Administration are constantly and deeply debasing this nation, many of its institutions, and tens of millions of Americans whose desire to reclaim a more absolute white male oligarchic supremacy has corroded their ability to reason.
“This President and his Administration are constantly and deeply debasing this nation, many of its institutions, and tens of millions of Americans whose desire to reclaim a more absolute white male oligarchic supremacy has corroded their ability to reason.”
That’s the heart of the matter, isn’t it? In my opinion, we need to repeat this refrain over and over. We need to continually ask our fellow citizens, “Why do certain Republicans tolerate the crimes and corruption of a person who was elected to the highest office in the land by misleading and lying to the American people? Isn’t it because his election offered them their only hope of reclaiming oligarchic white male supremacy?”
Thank your for framing the juxtaposition correctly.
Nailed it.
The Republicans won’t say “it doesn’t matter”, they will say “Lies! All lies! Fake News! We will bury you!”
They are in the land of total delusion and aren’t listening to reality at any point.
Right-wing authoritarians, otherwise known as the Republican base, do not care about anything said about Strongman Trump, because they see him as the rightful authority.
That’s the son of a bitch about fascism and the right-wing authoritarians who enable it.
Facts, truth, and reality are only what the rightful authority says. Everything else is lies told by back-stabbing traitors.
I’ve already seen comments from Republicans that “all” Trump did was break campaign finance laws, which, for them apparently is a big fat nothingburger because “everyone does it” + it may only result in a small fine.
This is the ususal excuse handed out for all Republican politicians’ criminal activities beginning with Nixon & Watergate. It’s almost word for word what my parents said to me: “No big deal, and, anyway, ‘everyone else’ does it, too.”
The issue with Trump and his various adulteries with porn stars and whatnot is equally shrugged off by Republicans I know who basically said “Clinton did it, too,” which somehow means that it’s NOW “ok” for Republicans to screw around on their wives (family values be damned) and not have to suffer any consequences. When I point out that – Yes, Clinton DID do that, BUT he was impeached for it… I get a circular convo about how “Clinton opened the door” for adultry, so something something it’s ok now for Republicans to screw around with no consequences or something or “look over there!”
The right wing lives in a world of delusional propaganda 24/7/365 served to them by Fox, Rush & their Christiany “churches.” Reality is meaningless in the face of it.
