Actually, at home I like the theme we’ve got: The muted brown with a bold splash of color. But, at work the colors aren’t nearly as pleasing (not that I’ll be looking at work much — I just wanted to see what it looked like)
I’d like to use that graphic mary made me. I know the graphic will have to be adapted for size or taking out the text. So finding a layout that could be adapted for that would be good. That’s a lot of adaptation — and it might just be easier to find a tutorial for building a Theme from scratch & do that.
(shaking head, I think I’m more tired than I look)
For other out-of-the-box Themes, I like the ones with some kind of nature image, or some abstract images. Not the imageless ones.
Katiebird I went to your new site and it does look wonderful. I myself am in need of some good advice on controlling my weight. I looked at my above posts and although it wasn’t meant that way, it must have sounded very insensitive. I certainly didn’t mean it that way and if it was taken as such, I sincerely apologize.
Family Man — I’m happy that you like the site & I totally missed it if you said anything inappropriate earlier (where?).
I hope I don’t come off sounding like I can give advice. I can share my experiences, research, ideas for personal experiments and dreams. And I hope others will as well. But, advice?
That sounds way more assured than I’ve ever been.
I just posted an Open Thread — stop by & introduce yourself there!
The top links at Google say Janis Joplin. But, that isn’t who I’m hearing in my head. Then they mention The Rooftop Singers (1963). Which sounds more like it to me — but doesn’t ring a clear bell.
It was a group. I remember listening to it on the radio way back. That’s what’s in my head, the group singing.
Why didn’t I think of google search? Thanks.
Also done by Boot Randolph, Gator Jackson, Jimmy Smith, The Ventures, Trini Lopez, The Rooftop Singers, Chet Atkins and over 130 others between 1962 and 2000. It was on the Forest Gump soundtrack done by the Rooftop Singers so I’m guessing that’s the version you are remembering.
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
Everybody’s talkin’
‘Bout a new way of walkin’
Do you want to lose your mind
Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on
That’s exactly it. I kept thinking New Christy Minstrels or some other folk group back then. You’ve put the song in my head and I can’t get it out. Heeeeeeeeelp.
I tend to avoid military sci-fi but I read pretty much everything else. I also don’t read much older sci-fi because of the sexism (or current authors who have that in common with the older ones) — I’m just not willing any more to put up with that, regardless of a book’s overall quality — there’s just too much other good stuff to read instead. So that’s a frame of reference for this list which is just who comes to mind and in no particular order. And who do you like?
Nancy Kress
Candace Jane Dorsey
Charles Stross*
Vernor Vinge
Jack McDevitt
Ursua LeGuin
Joan Slonczewski
Julie Czerneda
Gwyneth Jones*
Rosemary Kirstein
I forgot to say that LeGuin writes both sci-fi and fantasy.
While I love Kirstein’s books she is about half-way through series that is taking her a very long time to write. Dorsey and Jones are more speculative fiction writers.
Of the more science-oriented writers, Nancy Kress is my favorite, has been writing for a long time and has a large number of very good books.
Jack McDevitt, who has also been around for a long time, write books that combine space exploration and archeology.
Vernor Vinge is my favorite big ideas, big complicated story lines author.
Slonczewski and Czerneda are biologists and the science in their books center around that rather than physics. What I love about Czerneda is her ability to build the entire coherent ecology for a species. She does however tend toward the space opera end of things and a healthy dollop of romance.
looks so inviting…one drawback of apartment life is no fireplace to curl up next to…
May have to turn in soon — spouse at the point where I have to yell “Stay awake!” every 5 minutes…
(yawn)
bed. bed. bed.
So much that we can crack a couple of windows and smell them as we look at the image.
I think it’s about time someone figured out how to make it animate like the little jumping emoticons.
I’m probably wrong, but I think you’d need two or more very similar images to make it ‘cook’. There’s only one image of this particular fire, though.
Enjoy your night, everyone. See you on the morrow!
Good night all!
Back from a nice dinner, and settling in in front of the fire looks just right. Probably going to turn in pretty early tonight too (Pacific time).
Good Morning!!
Hey, I’ve realized the trick of not getting picked on for going to bed. I just need to stop saying good night.
::slaps forehead::
(smile)
And here I always felt guilty for NOT saying goodnight. I never realized it was a genius trick.
You are so clever that you just intuited the wisdom of doing it.
On another subject, if I go looking at themes today, what kinds of characteristics in themes appeal to you?

Walk right in, Set right down, and Baby, let your hair hang down.
Who sang that? I remember the song, but it has been driving me crazy I can’t remember the group.
Could I have some of your coffee. I feel like I’m going to tip over.
Sure just got a pot brewed. Do a webbels wobble so you won’t fall down. 🙂
Maybe you’re getting a big head from how great eat4today is looking. Now your feet will have to grow to keep you from tipping over.
I think I’m purely exhausted from dreaming about ductape’s rant all night.

Before I forget, are you going to put a cafe before your appointment on Monday or do you want me to open a froggybottom one?
I’ll check MOnday morning and if the overnight one is getting full I’ll put a fresh one up. I’ll be home by about noon eastern time.

Walk Right In by Gus Cannon (1962)
Also done by Boot Randolph, Gator Jackson, Jimmy Smith, The Ventures, Trini Lopez, The Rooftop Singers, Chet Atkins and over 130 others between 1962 and 2000. It was on the Forest Gump soundtrack done by the Rooftop Singers so I’m guessing that’s the version you are remembering.
!! Yay, Andi!
You have to be right. I remember it on the radio in the 60’s. I didn’t remember it was on Forrest Gump. Thanks for reminding me.
The Rooftop Singers version is from 1964. If you want to see everybody did it the song, here’s the list.
Walk Right In

Walk right in, sit right down
Daddy, let your mind roll on

Did you go look at my list upthread of the various artists who have performed this song?
Yes I did. I couldn’t believe the spectrum of singer. I can imagine it done in a country style.
that you thought was the version you are hearing in your head?
BTW, snippets of songs that get into your head and won’t leave are called earworms.
Thanks – never heard that.
This is off subject, but I remember you saying you were a sci-fi fan. I was just wondering who your favorite authors are.

I used to be an avid sci-fi reader. Now it’s mostly TV & movies. I recognize some of the writers in your list.
Thanks, I think I’ll drop by the library to see what they have.
refine the list somewhat.

come out, come out whoever you are.
[A little bird told me that you might be one of the not-so-tall-that-you-can-brag-about-it cool kids.]
Boo!
Umm, it’s a little late for a surprise effect, dontcha think?
