It’s still too close to call. This is a fresh thread for easier refreshing.
Update [2005-8-2 21:53:43 by BooMan]:
Update [2005-8-2 22:39:17 by BooMan]:Various accounts out of Clermont. They claim humidity is fouling up the automated ballot counters. Yeah, it’s only humid in Clermont. Meanwhile the Clermont Board of Elections Page has gone dead. I smell a rat.

for the fresh Hackett thread.
Now it’s 50/50 with 662 precincts reporting. Complete nailbiter tonight.
US HOUSE Ohio 2nd Dist
662 precincts of 753 reporting
JEAN SCHMIDT 49,681 50%
PAUL HACKETT 48,811 50%
Kos just said that a lot of blogs are crashing because of this race tonight.
Swing State Project is still up, but the posts are frequent. Gave up going to dKos. Threads were filling up too quickly.
What’s the source for the county returns in the update?
I wonder what turnout was? Have we heard? If it was lots above normal, even that is something.
answered my question:
cool.
I’ve read the expectation was 50,000 to 60,000. With the higher a turn out the worse for Paul.
The total with 662 precints out of 753 is 98,492.
Paul has managed to achieve an unbelievable 20% swing in the most Republican Congressional district in Ohio. The GOP in Ohio should be very worried.
And it’s not over. We’re in re-count territory here.
but here’s what I just posted on the old thread:
* [new] Might look good for Hackett (none / 0)
According to the Enquirer, there are four counties with precincts outstanding, Clermont, Adams, Pike, and Scioto. Clermont looks like Schmidt country, she’s running 58-42 and there’s still 48% of the vote to be counted. Scioto, Pike and Adams both look like Hackett turf. He’s up 58-42 in Adams, with 64% of the vote still outstanding. Pike is even better for for Hackett, he’s up 69-31 with half the vote still to be counted. In Scioto, he’s got a strong lead (66-34) but there’s only 29% still to be counted.
I’ve got my fingers crossed, and I’m chewing my nails to the nub.
C’mon, Ohio!
Oh gee… it’s amazing that it’s this close. Great, amazing and really, really nervewracking.
But I hope that I’ll have great news when I wake up tomorrow.
Have a good night all.
Night….say a little prayer if you are so inclined.
Buenas noches, compadre.
And rest assured that whatever the outcome, we won a huge fucking victory tonight. Two years ago they took this district with more than 70% of the vote. Two years before the same, and on, and on.
That, we have turned around. Big time.
to Booman and Susan for keeping us posted. And all of this Tribe for being so f’ing passionate. I need a massage right now. Very tense.
I need information. Where are the f-ing updates? I hate republican elections officials!
Hang in there Booman. We knew they would take their sweet time. God, I really didn’t expect it to be this close.
yeah, but look at your sitemeter stats for today, that should be very good news regardless of the Ohio GOooPers’ incompetence.
I think our Site Meter is run by the Republicans too! We had way more people than that!
I’m comfy now, watching the ‘turns … and got Mikey Malloy on the ‘net too.
ummm Susan? Not to be rude but….I think it’s time to shave. π
Which parts?
(someone on the raccoon list sent this photo, and I thought it was so cute … those racoon list people are bonkers for their coonies, many of whom live in their homes with them! As you can see.)
Oh! I’m so glad that’s not a picture of a racoon in your house, lol.
Not that there is anything wrong with people having (reportedly untameable) critters in the house if they want to, but still.
That is just too funny!
No matter what the final tally now, there will be recounts and the whole can of worms that opens. How many machines in this district were Diebold owned? Are there any unusual delays in the precincts reporting? Hell, we all know the drill. Are we going to believe that a valiant warrior got defeated by a wicked witch?!
I’ve been off-line for most of yesterday and today, transitioning to a old/new computer but I get on-line for this drama and realize I already know the script.
How many times can one person hit the flipping refresh button? UGH! This is so nerve wracking but lets face it that no matter what happens, win or lose this will send a clear message to the repugs that 06 will NOT be a slam dunk.
I think they are keeping it at 50/50 so long on purpose.
Meanies.
This has really, really been fun! Thanks for all the newsie reports, Nanette!
LOL, yes it has, regardless of how it turns out. I think it’s a victory that it’s even a nailbiter!
And you’re welcome – thanks to you guys as well!
wcpo. Clermont is the only county with outstanding precincts. Hackett has closed there to 56-44, and the votes differential is now about 1800. 48% of precincts outstanding.
Hackett held his lead in the three smaller counties (Pike, Adams, and Scioto), and they are all reporting 100% of their precincts. It all comes down now to Clermont.
Unless there are some Dem precincts there, it doesn’t look like he can pull it off.
hmmm… that sounds just a tad fishy… the very county she is from being the very last to report their findings?
Last and still very slow. It’s been at least ten minutes and the Enquirer numbers for Clermont haven’t moved at all.
Somehow, though, I don’t think Hackett would pull a Kerry or a Gore if it looked like there were fraud in this election.
Aaron Brown on CNN is going to do a bit on the Hackett election after the commercial break.
Looking at the creature Schmidt, I think she came off the same production line as one of my state’s congresspeople, the odious Kathryn Harris. There’s quite a resemblance between them, from the too-tight facial skin to the staggering ignorance and stupidity they exhibit every time they open their mouths.
Going for a walk. I’ll probably do it in record time. “What was that flash of light that just went past?” “Oh, that was just kansas in a hurry to get back to the election returns.”
Come on, come on, come on!!!
This is just too painful. Somebody please post something funny. Need something to break the tension.
A guy and a monkey walk into a bar. The guy asks for a draft beer, and the monkey asks for a pitcher. The bartender serves them both, the monkey gets up and takes the pitcher to the bathroom.
Comes back a second a later, and orders another pitcher. Bartender pulls it for him, he goes back to the bathroom, comes back a second later and orders another pitcher.
Bartender looks at him, scratches his head, and says: “You drinking that beer, or what?”
Monkey says, “of course, I’m drinking it. And George Bush lied the country into an unwinnable war in Iraq that has cost us 1800 American lives and counting.”
It’s just slightly possible that I’ve found someone even worse at telling jokes than I am ;).
Might need a bit more evidence first though!
I have one that is really briannianes (I’m spelling her name wrong, and I’ve forgotten much of the joke, but anyway – I think I remembered the gist of it).
It’s not a dirty joke, just slightly mussy:
“Why wasn’t the lead character in Star Wars named Ken Skywalker?”
“Because then … um… (whoever it was that said that line) would have had to say ‘Use the Force, Ken'”
Am I that bad?
Well… still not worse than me, on reflection ;). So that’s good!
you made a BooMan TU.
Well, something good out of this night… It’s been real.

Here’s a flash game called Give Bush a Brain that you could pass the time with. I think it’s funny.
Just what I need…another time waster…
What else you going to do with all that spare time? π
I don’t know if that’s funny…..
I have been over at MLW posting but have been reading here too — they just want to keep us up all night. Goddamn it!
Oh, there you are. If I had waited just a little bit longer, I could not only have told your joke, but I could have spelled your name right!
No worries! I didn’t even spell it right when I registered here — it’s supposed to have 4 Ns — brinnaine….oh, well! That’s why Brinn will always do jes’ fine! π
Brinnainne — heh. It’s only my “real” name in the Dark Age of Camelot anyway, but I still like it! π
I can fix the spelling if you want.
Sure, BooMan, that’s be great, but only if it’s not a pain in the butt! It doesn’t matter to me all that much, but if you have the time and it won’t mess anything up that’s awesome!
let’s make sure I spelled it right: Brinnainne
Yep, that’s it! π
(and for anyone whose wondering, it’s pronounced Brinn-yayne)
Chris:
This could be good news. ?
Good news in the sense that they are paper ballots. What it means for Hackett, though???
No idea. Chris Bowers is still looking for info on the Clermont County voting machines tho, so maybe someone has heard something is up.
Sigh.
Don’t our Ohio recount warriors from last winter have that stuff?
You’d think so. I can’t reach the kos site, so I can’t tell if any of the ones who did all that investigating are telling what they know.
ARingMD2B at dKos diaried just a few moments ago that they are optical scanners.
Why would they be hand counting these particular ballots? Have they already started a hand recount of the rest of the district?
Hi Katiebird! Great sig line..thanks for that attribute…lol!
I just couldn’t use it without giving you proper credit!
Ah, ya’ll would like a song by Uncle Tupelo, whose title escapes me right now, but the chorus goes like this:
Your heaven looks just like my hell, it’s beautiful, as far as I can tell….
If they are counting by hand, how long will that take?
don’t listen to Mike Malloy … he’s doinga commendable job … it’s just so fucking frustrating.
— people showed up at their precincts today only to find them closed
— malfunctions, blah, blah
BooMan is right… we’re being fucked with again.
ACTUALLY … if your nerves can handle it, listen. He’s getting e-mails from people who voted in the election today. Interesting stuff.
Is he on Air America Susan?
Yes. He’s doing a good job…
LISTEN
Oh Jeez, I don’t like this one bit. Their site is down? Paul Hackett get down there now.
the one that closed off public viewing of the process last November because of the fake “homeland security” warning? I’m so confused (and cranky — but that’s probably because I’m hungry)…

Here’s what is says now — 191 of 191 reporting.
Early Voting Election Day Provisional Total Percentage
JEAN SCHMIDT 1158 16162 0 17320 58.09%
PAUL HACKETT 750 11689 0 12439 41.72%
Write In Votes 3 56 0 59 0.20%
Total Votes Cast 1911 27907 0 29818 100.00%
Enquirer reporting the same numbers.
Schmidt finishes with a 4000 vote lead overall, 52-48.
Well, he made it close anyway. Doesn’t look close enough for a recount, though, unless there’s evidence of shenanigans somewhere.
Oh, well.
bummer
Bummer π
How are you doing, Cicero?
we got crushed.
But, in all honesty, I’m greedy enough that I don’t mind terribly.
I’m going to PEI in a few weeks for R and R- can’t wait.
Just checking in after an evening on a conference call to see how things were going… and what do I see???
Too close to call??!!!!
50% / 50% and still counting??!!!!
::Squeals with glee::
Wow. SEE, you idiots in the DLC, what happens when a Democrat stands his ground and speaks the plain, unvarnished truth?
Again, Wow.
for comic material, but it turns out they are sweating as much as us. Did find the following (with no link)
Time of update Schmidt (R) Hackett (D)
10:49 PM EDT 59,132 (51.74%) 55,151 (48.26%)
9:49 PM EDT 49,681 (50.44%) 48,811 (49.56%
Total
Schmidt: 59,095 votes (52%)
Hackett: 55,091 votes (48%)
LINK
VICTORY, he took a 70 to 30 % district and made a race of it only losing by 4004 votes out of almost 100K, the repugs have got to be wetting their shorts because of this.
but then we also have:
US HOUSE Ohio 2nd Dist
753 precincts of 753 reporting
JEAN SCHMIDT 57,974 52%
PAUL HACKETT 54,401 48%
LINK
Go figure.
From the results of this election.
WORRY
A message to the DLC, DCCC, and any other “we know best” alphabets… get in with us, or get out of the way.
Congrats to Paul Hackett for pulling this in sooooo close, even if not quite. And to the blogosphere and all the volunteers and the people who gave money and everyone.
We can win in 2006, 2008 and beyond, if we just fight.
going to be a kick ass ride.
You bet… can’t wait!
Yes, indeed! We have to fight AND keep them under the freakin’ spotlight, in all 50, everywhere.
I hope that PH reconsiders going back to Iraq, or at least runs from there in ’06. And returns safely either way.
Whew! What a night, eh?
A message to the DLC, DCCC, and any other “we know best” alphabets… get in with us, or get out of the way.
AND WE HAVE A WINNER!
I could agree with you more… You would just have to change it so that “the Dems need to kick the DLC out of their party.”
But that is just my opinion as an independent.
Based on the Jerome analysis BooMan posted earlier tonight, anything in the 50% range for Hackett was “Tidal.” So I would like to think that this is the start of a tsumani that will sweep the corrupt neocons out of office and out of power and out of our lives.
As for the vote-counters, perhaps Ohio should change its state motto: Ohio: The new Florida!
I am so GD proud of Hackett and his honest upfront ballsy campaign. He had nothing to lose and he gained the experience of a campaign. This IS a victory just not real sweet. Night my friends. Thanks for the shared passion. We can do this like Nanette said. Here we come Neocons….look out…you ain’t seen nuttin yet!
to Paul to tell him how proud I am of him and the campaign he ran. I bet he would love hearing from all of us. I encouraged him to run again in 06.
does anyone think schmidt will be stupid enough to say that her district sends a message that Presnit’s mandate has been validated.
again just wondering out loud.
Almost certainly.
Yep:
Republican narrowly defeats Iraqi war veteran
I have to go to bed, this makes me ill
but before I go, I just wanted to mention that redstate.org is claiming a major Republican victory….
over Kos.
Strange folks, right wingers.
Hope everyone has a good night/day.
