Two classified government documents show Bush personally approved torture techniques and overseas detentions, says the ACLU (via The International Herald Tribune):

WASHINGTON: The Central Intelligence Agency has acknowledged for the first time the existence of two classified documents, including one signed by President George W. Bush, that have guided the agency’s interrogation and detention of terror suspects.
The CIA disclosed the existence of the documents in a letter Friday sent from the agency’s associate general counsel, John McPherson, to lawyers for the American Civil Liberties Union.
The contents of the documents were not revealed, but one document, as described by the ACLU, is “a directive signed by President Bush granting the CIA the authority to set up detention facilities outside the United States and outlining interrogation methods that may be used against detainees.”
The second document, according to the group is a Justice Department legal analysis “specifying interrogation methods that the CIA may use against top Al Qaeda members.”
Maybe this is why he bought all that real estate in Paraguay.
Of course, we are talking about Bush. I would bet money that he can’t find Iraq on a map even after 6 years as President. Just because Junior signed something doesn’t mean he had a clue what he was authorizing. I don’t think he’s stupid, just intentionally ignorant of things he doesn’t care about, like presidenting.
I just get less and less proud to be an American every day… I swear it’s so depressing.
Pax
Rev. Moon is a menace.
all that evidence from the White House to the torture cell will be revealed.
Great. I just received an email from Conyers that he and Pelosi agree that impeachment is “off the table.” Then I read this.
They are all effers.
The only impeachable offense is lying about a blow job. I’m sure it’s in the small print of Article II of the Constitution.
This is why conservatives like to say the ACLU hates America. After all, only someone that hates America would want to reveal the extent to which this Administration has been willing to degrade itself, squander our reputation, and disregard our laws, our traditions, and international standards of conduct.
I’d hate to think what they regard as proper for people that love America.
There will be even more evidence if the CIA loses on its continued withholding of some documents, including 21 images depicting abuse of detainees in Iran AND Afghanistan.
The ACLU has more here. It’s been posting the 100,000+ documents obtained in the FOIA suit.
If the new Congress actually uses its subpoena powers, leading us up the chain of command, this story will rival Watergate for historical importance.
