So much for the romance of the century. Love is such a fragile thing.
The engagement of Bristol Palin, the daughter of the 2008 Republican vice-presidential candidate, Sarah Palin, and Levi Johnston has ended just over two months after the birth of their son, it was confirmed today.
Johnston told the Associated Press the couple had mutually decided to end their relationship “a while ago”.
The 19-year-old, speaking at his family’s home in Wasilla, Alaska, declined to elaborate but said some details of the break-up – rumours about which had been circulating on the internet – were inaccurate.
At least they’ll always have Minneapolis and St. Paul.
I just hope Tripp can still see his dad once in a while when he’s old enough.
With Sarah Barracuda as his grandmother? I highly doubt it.
Maybe if he goes to Russia…
you can see Russia from his house.
Romney-Palin in 2012 = Bristol-Levi in 2012.
Ladies and Gentlemen, it’s the coercively cobbled together family values traveling show!
Maybe, if the young couple had practiced safe sex like millions of others, this regrettable situation would not have occurred. I always felt it was like a national embarrassment for the Republicans to have Palin’s daughter and her boyfriend appear at the nominating convention last summer. After all, aren’t Republicans the ones who trumpet throughout the land. family values and abstinence before marriage?
There is something about the GOP and hypocrisy. Such an inevitable and natural combination.
For the Repukes, family values begins and ends with abortion. If you have one, you don’t have family values. If you bear the child, you have family values. That’s the whole deal.
Another pair of teenagers in over their heads. Nothing to see here, move along. As much as I detest Sarah Palin, the amount of schadenfreude that has been expressed over her daughter’s haplessness is kind of distasteful.
The politicization began on the right. They realized that they had a serious problem on their hands – having a family values superstar with an unmarried pregnant child. So, bring out the circus.
It was a terrible thing for the kids. The question is, what kind of mother could do this to her own daughter?
The politicization began on the right.
…and was eagerly carried to its absurd (and cruel) conclusion by the left, which likes to think of itself as being above the nastiness of the right.
If we allow the standards of our behavior to be set by the ever-lower bar set by the right, we will end up in the same gutter they dwell in and, arguably, be even more deserving of the opprobrium we will receive because we should have known better.
In any case, the hypocrisy of Sarah Palin was plainly evident to anyone who was paying attention without our having to pile on the kids. All that is accomplished by throwing salt into the self-inflicted wounds of the right is to inspire pity for them.
I’m actually just happy that the two kids realized that having a baby together was not a good reason to get married in this day and age. Every time the news monsters would talk about them, I’d get annoyed because they were holding these kids up like an exemplar for everyone when I’ve seen that movie play out a couple of times in real life and each time it ended in a nasty divorce. Marriage is tough, and saddling yourself with someone just because they’re the other parent of your kid is not a good way to start off a lifelong partnership. I don’t really have any schadenfreude about this at all – I’m just happy they were allowed to make the right decision here.
That said – I almost threw my remote at the television last night when I accidentally didn’t get the TV shut off before the local 10’o-clock news came on and the FIRST GODDAMN STORY was about Bristol and Levi breaking it off. WTF?
Agreed, totally distatsteful from start to finish. i feel bad for both kids. or all three, if you count Tripp.
i especially feel bad for bristol, who’s getting attacked for saying “abstinence doesn’t work”.
i hate it when parents use their kids as props, and also when people attack the parents through the kids.
For gift ideas the couple is registered at Smith and Wesson.
I wish them both well. And I hope he pays his child support.
With what? He dropped out of HS and his mom is in jail for distributing meth.
Bristol can pretty much just look forward to living off her mom’s governor pension (or unreported per deim)_, though I think she’ll (Sarah) probably take a run at the Senate.
Bristol seems like a nice enough kid but I doubt there are many job prospects for an unskilled single mom in AK. At best she will likely marry a different self proclaimed redneck, only one with a job.
I doubt there are many job prospects for an unskilled single mom in AK
there aren’t a lot of jobs for unskilled single moms anywhere. that’s one of the tragedies of teenage pregnancy.
If the GOP is true to form — and so far they’ve never disappointed — they will brand it and market it. After all, this only intensifies Sarah Palin’s already impressive “populist” credentials. Hell, the woman’s virtually a walking, talking country and western song. Nobody would ever confuse her with one of those inside-the-beltway eggheads. Sarah Palin understands the problems of Real America because — except for the odd fact that she is a state governor and has lots of money and connections — she has most of those problems herself. You see where I’m going with this.
If I were Mr. Johnston I would consider a move to the lower 48. Gov. Palin and spouse have a record of monomaniacal vendettas against men who spurn their female relatives.
In the far east they would sometimes declare, “You no butterfly boy!”
