CNN reports a small plane has hit a building on East 71st Street. No word on whether Bush is reading My Pet Goat. Stay tuned.

Helicopter, apparently, hitting a building on the East River side of town. All types of helicopters travel all over the city all the time, no surprise.
according to MSNBC. Weather murky in NYC (70% chance of showers for tonight’s playoff game). Witnesses seem to be saying that they heard a strange low sound; may have been some equipment trouble and couldn’t get to the helipad.
I just hope no one was in those apartments that are in flames — due to time of day (mid-afternoon) it’s likely those residents were at work, but we may never know for sure…
Those are a hell of a lot of apartments — no way to make assumptions.
As of right now, a single fatality is reported street-level. Probably debris.
‘Terror’ notion brought in immediately, of course, even in refutation.
Contradictions re aircraft type persist.
of fuel fires on the ground — possible someone got caught in one of those.
One confirmed dead — folks trapped on upper floors.
NTSB coming in, SOP for aircraft accidents.
Still not sure which floor it’s on…
What a goddamn mess.
Lara insisted that he broaden himself.
Talked to a witness who saw “a helicopter in flames” falling from the building…
If I’m hearing correctly, the crash was shortly pre-dawn, about 520. As far as I know, the reports are just coming out. If so, why the delay? Bush presser?
Apparently, too, there was currently ‘no known terror threat’.
Flight restrictions now in place within about 20 block radius of the site.
Frankly, at the moment I put nothing beyond the realm of possibility. No reason to do so, far as I can tell.
2 fatalities now confirmed. Very murky reportage.
How is it that we can see the wreckage, but can’t confirm aircraft type?
Word from Petagon they are scrambling jets over several cities “just as a precaution. Hello October Surprise. Ain’t gonna work KKKarl.
I’m sure Turdblossom’s busily figuring out how to milk this one for all it’s worth, as we live & breathe. They really need to.
OK, now I hear the crash was an hour ago, not 520.
WhiteHouse claims it’s ‘plugged in’ to the NYPD.
Goes back to Reagan and PATCO? Hmm.
Via MSNBC, WhiteHouse confirms ‘within minutes’ of the crash reports that this was not an act of terrorism.
Apparently there were no threats to Cheney’s mental equilibrium.
Milking this for all it’s worth. Terrible event, but not worthy of the near hysterical reporting.
I guess this will knock the maniacal performance by the Decider off tonight’s news, except for perhaps Olbermann.
Of course, CSPAN will replay it in all it’s demented glory at 8pm EDT tonight..
‘You have to be scared all the time. This is a dangerous, dangerous world ..’

ESPN News reports that Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle was on the plane.
Unknown if he was the pilot or was just a passenger; reports are that he was in the process of purchasing the craft and getting his license.
Lidle is a former A’s pitcher — will probably be a moment of silence before tonight’s game…
Yet another ID survives conflagration to land in the street, as on 911.
Now we can amp up the coverage with the Yankees angle. Horrible all around.
No, no ID…it is his plane, according to CNN.
Howdy there, ej.
Above comment was a direct quote from MSNBC.
Tweety now stating that the plane turned off of the river into the building. Off of the river would be a westerly direction; building, however, was hit on the northern side, pretty square on.
Well, to heck with Tweety.
OK yeah, I see that popping up in several of the other news outlets now. CNN didn’t have it when I looked.
This whole thing is bizarre.
Not a direct quote, but direct comment on what I heard on the teevy.
his passport was found on the ground.
Now I’ve heard four dead, according to ESPN…
Some authorities are confirming that Lidle was on the plane, but didn’t catch whom…
Now the WhiteHouse refuses to comment on the nature of the crash — while their earlier statement was unequivocal.
O, and Bush is apparently aware of the accident. Good for him.
Soon-to-be-former Gov. Pataki (R) states that NYC airspace is obviously poorly protected, five years after 911.
Here’s Bloomberg, parroting prior BushCo statement that this was absolutely not related to terrorism, as did Pataki. BushCo, meantime, has withdrawn that assessment. Jeez, get yer ducks in a row there, boys!
Bloomberg claims this event says nothing about NYC airspace security.
