Time for Friday Random 10…
What are you drinking?
It’s a gorgeous spring day here, perfect for an orange blossom martini…
The iPod’s loaded and ready to play

May the 4’s be with you
Ooooo . . . I’ll have to do my Random 10 later on.
Hey Janet, if you’re around, Arlo is coming back to Seattle in July! I’ll have the details later, but right now I have to go catch a bus. I have a chance to get off work early and I’m gonna take it.
One More Heartache – Butterfield Blues Band
Ring Them Bells – Joan Baez
Light Rain Blues – Taj Mahal
Nocturne – Roches
Milestones – Charlie Parker
Aja – Steely Dan
Always Will – Nanci Griffith
St. Claire – Suzanne Vega
Heartbeats Accelerating – Kate & Anna McGarrigle
You’re Missing – Cowboy Junkies
I know your whole list, and it’s nice to see Nanci Griffith on it.
I think the Roches are playing at the Sunday night $10 concert series here this summer in July. The lineup is actually pretty cool this year: [Link http://www.umconcerts.org].
Looks like an interesting list. I’ve seen Buckwheat Zydeco in concert — it was great fun. Also Michelle Shocked. And I’d love to see the Roches.
I love Buckwheat Zydeco, wonder why I don’t own any? Maybe I need to remedy that.
I’ve seen all of them before, but it’ll be fun to see them again. Plus, it’s outdoors. My favorite.
I’m shocked, SHOCKED to see the Cowboy Junkies and Kate and Anna McGarrigle. Oh, and the Roches. And Suzanne Vega. 🙂
There’s a certain comfort in knowing exactly what your random 10 will be each week, but the real surprise is the order.
about the shuffle routine. We have 3800 songs in Itunes.
I hate LOL so I’ll just say “chuckling merrily.”
All good stuff, AndiF. I’m listening in!
i’m good at random; what’s the game? will two random links get me anything?
http://thankyoustephencolbert.org/wordpress/
thank colbert if you haven’t already! the second one is a googlebomb i’m trying to get started:
Joe Lieberman
won’t you join me?
But I did that already!
How are you doing, Cedwyn?
exempt from any future admonitions, then!
; P
i’m ok…could be better, but whatever. at least i have a job now.
how’re cabin girl and two of our finest future voters?
Should break 50,000 by tomorrow. Boy, do I love these thank you messages!
since lamont’s campaign page is already on page 8 of a search for Lieberman, i’ma use that url instead of the link for donations.
Joe Lieberman
if you felt like giving it a few ranking clicks as a search result, here is page 8.
wheeee!
that orange blossom martini looks great to me …
ok here’s my random 10
Circle of Life — Elton John
Vision of Love –Mariah Carey
You can’t treat the wrong Man Right — Linda Rondstadt
Because the Night -Bruce Springsteen (live)
Go on and on —Gladys Knight/Elton John
I can’t stand the rain – the Commitments
Beloved Wife – Natalie Merchant
Black Water – Doobie Brothers
Stand by your Man – Tammy Wynette
Mother and Child Reunion – Paul Simon
Listen to the Music – Doobie Brothers
I have to admit, they did taste like “more”… 🙂
So how did Tammy Wynette sneak in there?
I love Patti Smith’s version of Because the Night.
I think Tammy is on a movie soundtrack. I think it’s weird how itunes shuffles. I get 2 Doobies songs even though I only own one Doobies CD.
That happened to me with the Austin Lounge Lizards this week.
I only have one thing to say. I can tell you and I are the same age.
Children born in the very early sixties, came of age in the 70’s and are now in the same rut? Us?
We need street kid too — she’s our age.
I don’t even have the refuge of saying I was born in the 60’s – I was 5 days too early! :::sobbing:::
would it help to know that dada and I were even a few days earlier than you?
Yes it would help. And being called young lady helps too. Thanks NDD – you’re a peach.
Always nice to hear someone who is 10 years younger bitching and moaning about her age. Thank goodness I’m resigned to my geezerhood.
Why SN is ageless. No age or time can contain the beautiful gentle soul of she who is without chocolate.
<barf>
That bad huh?
oh, one of your worst.
bleah
OK I’ll try harder next time, but I should be given a little pat on the back for it being the worst ever.
hey, you should be more careful with what you’re drinking and or quantity, as it’s kinda early in the evening to be <barf>ing.
I haven’t been to Friday night happy hour in a while and I forgot how strong her drinks were.
Have a told you lately that I love you, FM?
Nope but it’s nice to hear and same to you SN.
Here’s my 10:
Hey Little Minivan – Austin Lounge Lizards
Satyam Shivam Sundaram – Thievery Corporation
Mountain Jack – Reverend Gary Davis
I’ll Start with Me – Alice Peacock
Annabelle – Gillian Welch
Leonard Cohen’s Day Job – Austin Lounge lizards
Wonder – Natalie Merchant
Hard Times – eastmounntainsouth
I Believe – Deep Banana Blackout
They Don’t Know you – The Heartbeats
it’s a remind-Andi-she’s-a-geezer kind of night.
Either that or a remind-CabinGirl-she-has-bizarre-(or is that eclectic)-taste-in-music night.
Surely you’ve heard of Reverend Gary Davis, though.
Move over Granny, I’m lost too ;o)
Where’s your 10, Gramps?
eastmountainsouth?
Listen here.
This is great — I really like them.
The song in my Random 10 is a favorite…Here are the lyrics:
well that’s depressing.
So if someone asks you if you like a song and you’re not sure if you’ve heard it, and you say “how does it go?” I’m betting you want them to tell you the words and not necessarily hum the tune?
Well, you do need the tune to go with this one to realize that it isn’t all that depressing.
I want words and humming…
words are worthless to me without the melody. I just never know words. Melody alone will get me there usually, words and melody always, words alone — never.
It’s always the melody that get me first. There are some songs I don’t even know the words to, but the melody I always keep. For other people it the opposite.
me too. When I first tried using headphones years ago, I was just amazed at some of the lyrics to songs I’d been listening to for years, ha!
I was amazed at some of the lyrics I thought I knew, but had been getting wrong all that time.
with the ccr one; were you one of those who thought the “bathroom on the right” “instead of bad moon on the rise.”
LOL!
I refuse to answer that on the grounds of looking stupid.
I usually just go: you know the one that goes da da da always such a da da I think I’d doo doo do do.
so, more melody than words?
Apparently more doo doo. Doo doo does it for me.
check out Ollabelle…very tasty, NYC band…sotra contemporary blues, rock, folk, gospel poured together and stirred, not shaken.
Actually I like this better. It’s a little more interesting, musically. Although I’m unclear why you thought I’d like this IF I liked the other. I mean, they don’t seem remotely alike.
given her musical tastes, thought it might interest her.
good, I thought I was missing something 😉
They’re cool.
CG I just listened to rain come down and I really like the song. Good choice.
Me too.
Notice how I’m too lazy to change the subject line so I just erase most of it?
Laziness, a most worthy attribute I see you’ve acquired.
Thanks, FM. You Dance is another one that I like. (and it’s also on their little music player.)
I listened to all the ones they have on it and I think my favorite is So You Are To Me. It’s a very haunting melody.
Even I, hip as I am, have never heard of at least 3 of those.
I’m so glad you all act like I’m hip instead of weird. 🙂
I was going for hip, weird, and motherly.
Never heard of any of these guys! (hangs head)
count me 9/10 clueless then, I’ve only heard of the Austin LL before.
Nice to have company, NDD!
Hi, guys! I’m back with chilled glass of chardonnay in hand. It’s really beautiful up in Placerita Canyon, but very dry despite the rains. Also, there is a lot of mud filling places where for many years there were beautiful brooks and streams, so I don’t quite get that. Mud slides?
Hi MM. Sounds like you had a good day and wonderful picture.
It was cool, FM. I was a little spooked being up there all alone, but only saw one other woman walking by herself and two neo-hippie type kids pretending to take pictures with a digital so I wouldn’t guess they went up there to get stoned.
don’t usually do one ’cause I busy tryin’ to expand y’alls musical horizons over at KP’s joint…but maybe it’ll work here too, here’s what the iTunes grabbed:
Southern Chicks Blues: Chris Thomas King
Leavin’ Trunk: Taj Mahal
False Start, Stop Breakin’ Down: Big Bad Smitty
Gimme a Penny: Big Momma Thornton w/ Muddy Waters Band
Untitled: Taj
Yet Another in a Long Series of Yellow Car: Patricia Barber
Sweet Little Angel: Big Momma T
Goin’ Down: Tutu Jones
The Pusher: Nina Simone
Soldier: Tangle Eye
Peace
Taj Mahal.
Muddy Waters.
I miss them! Time to break out the vinyl!
What’s going on with Raw Story? I can’t load their website but get a message saying “currently awaiting resolution.”
Not working for me either.
It’s working for me. Just double checked. Are you guys on Macs?
PC
And I tried it in firefox and IE, no luck.
Mac.
And it still doesn’t work for me. Glad to know it works for you though. I thought they might be getting sued or something, and I would hate to have to wait around for a resolution on that!
It didn’t work for me either.
since i failed to uncover any official “rules,” you will now be subjected to 10 of my favoritest silly songs:
the stallion, pt. 3 – ween
you know my name (look up the number) – beatles
a small package of value will come to you shortly – jefferson airplane
come on baby, let’s go downtown – neil young
gin & juice – the gourds
paul revere – beastie boys
ana ng – they might be giants
beercan – beck
here i am – lyle lovett and his large band
how the !@#$%& could i possibly leave “walk like a camel” off the list?!
That was a horrendous oversight, let me tell you!
Love SCOTS.
its title is “camel walk.” man, i am losing it.
farscape
I really really need a chocolate intervention. I cleared my house of all sweet things, much to the chagrin of the Nature Boys, so that I wouldn’t be tempted to eat unhealthy crap. I’ve been good about not eating sweets for over a week.
So tonight I just had to, absolutely had to have chocolate. It’s like some damn sickness that I am powerless to control. So, those of you who know my history will not be surprised that I somehow foraged in the cabinets for the necessary supplies to make a bowl of chocolate frosting. God, help me.
there’s a flight I can catch that will get me there in time to snatch the spoon from your mouth.
It’s only once a month, why not just go with it? <she says with an evil grin on her face>
Dammit. Maybe you can get here in time to keep me from going back and licking the bowl. Trouble is it’s only once a month – for ten days!
That reminds me, I need to pull out my Kahlua cake recipe…
I’m so past that. Now I need Pringles.
I hate helping people be good. Wouldn’t you rather I helped you feel good about being bad?
one of my favorite things to say to people is “i’m always here for amoral support.”
leave the house and go for a walk. take NO money.
Leave the house?! I really should. I’ll be back soon, unless the gang members at the end of the street play kickball with me.
By request:
Cake:
1 box butter cake mix
1 4-ounce pkg chocolate instant pudding
1 c oil
1/2 c sugar
4 large eggs
1/4 c kahlua
1/4 c vodka
3/4 c water
Glaze:
1/2 stick butter or margarine
1/2 c sugar
1/3 c kahlua
Put all cake ingredients in a mixing bowl and beat on mediium speed for 4 minutes. Pour into greased and floured Bundt pan. Bake at 325 degrees for 60-70 minutes. Cool in pan for 10 minutes, then turn onto serving plate.
For glaze, combine butter, sugar, and kahlua and either heat on the stove of in the microwave until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves.
Poke holes in the cake and pour half of the glaze onto the cake. Use the over half to drizzle over cake while warm, or (even better) on ice cream.
Note: The cake rises high while baking, but will sink back down into the pan as it cools. This is normal.
bite for bite, it’s a better chocolate fix. it’s also moderately good for a body, whereas frosting by no wise is.
cadbury’s royal dark is some damn fine chocolate.
It’s actually not bad advice BUT since she threw away everything sweet, to do this she’d have to go to the store and we know what kind of orgy would happen there.
Okay. I’m pretending to know how to play this. Put my iPod on Shuffle Songs and list the first 10 songs that come up?
The Poet Acts — Philip Glass (The Hours)
Allegro — Concerto for Two Pianos — Mozart
Principles of Lust — Enigma
Nature Boy — Nat King Cole
Your Mother Should Know — The Beatles
House — Elton John
California Dreaming — Mamas and Papas
Moorea — Gypsy Kings
Floe — Philp Glass Ensemble
Allegro — Concerto No. 5 in F — Bach
Mozart concerto for two pianos … nice.
I’m not usually a big Philip Glass fan, although I’ve liked his works better as I’ve gotten older.
It was the sound track from The Hours that turned me on to Philip Glass. I’m still a bit edgy on the hard core Glass.
Ooh, very nice. I’m a fan of that Mozart fella myself. I wonder when he’s playing in the Raleigh area?
If I could figure out his current incarnation, I’d let you know. Not that I’m totally sold on this reincarnation stuff, but, I mean, imagine if…
Great list — I especially love ones that don’t make me feel like I’ve just been released from a 30 year cryogenesis.
Well, and then there’s the 200 and 300 year version. Not such a bad thing really, overall.
Back in the tube Andi ;o)
Wedding Song…Noel Paul Stukey
Amsterdam…..Coldplay
Hitch A ride….Boston
Just Because….Janes Addiction
Shoots and Ladders….Korn
I’m Free….Cream
One Little Victory….Rush
Trouble….Ray LaMontagne
Circles….Incubus
Let The Hogs Out….Alison Krause & Union Station
I’ve always loved the first song in spite of the seriously outdated lyrics and gender titles.
Ooh, ooh…and Cedwyns Lyle Lovett pick? Serious love song ;o)
I don’t think I know Ray Lamontagne.
Then check him out :o)
I listened to Trouble, I liked it.
It’s always just him and his guitar? No band?
He has an acommpanyst on bass sometimes. Wish I could catch him somewhere.
Almost but you do have Cream on there and a member of Peter, Paul and Mary.
Ginger Baker used to be my childhood drummer hero…till Neil Peart came along :o)
Did CG abandon us?
She’s probably busy making that cake.
wow, I’m glad you responded, I hate those weird moments when everyone is here and then everyone is gone. What did Indy call those moments? I can’t remember.
I’m at the New Lounge. COme on over!
