The fire’s burning and…
…we’re starting a Dart Tournament
Okay, who hit me in the ass with a dart? There’s a lot of likely candidates around these parts…
Heh, ManE you know there’s now an extra big red X on your FBI file for that image.
my driver’s license picture you would see that I already have an extra big red X on my FBI file. Apparently it is an infinitely renewable pass to a strip search every time I fly.
yourself to the BooTrib Frappr map yet?
that image, it makes me laugh every time I see it.
I look at the U.S. part and see the group hug in the last episode of the mary tyler moore show.
It’s raining here in Northern California…I like a campfire with the best of them, but today I’ll take my coffee with Bailey’s Irish Creme by the inside fire!
coming right up!
over the holidays?
Yep – we’ll do Christmas day with the grandkidlets and then leave mid-day on the 26th. This University job is cool…we don’t come back until Weds Jan 4th. AND it’s a paid holiday week!
Unfortunately no snow currently. This “pineapple express” rainstorm has moved the snow level to 6,000 ft and we are at 4,500. ;^(
Winter 2004 – at the front of the property
Oh, that looks just wonderful. I hope you get some snow while you are there. If not, you could always hike to the summit of Brokeoff Mountain (which was our favorite hike at Lassen) — I’m sure there will be snow up there.
Do I remember correctly that you are on the north side of the park?
Yes – we are on the north side….
Here’s one for your memories today
Thanks for the picture; it’s nice to be reminded of that fine hike. I’ll bet Brokeoff looks mighty fine covered with snow.
to the South Bay yet — looks like I got home just in time. 🙂
Will be going out later this evening with the spouse to find holiday cards for the in-laws, and to pick up the last few gifts; we’re getting gift cards for everyone in his family (got the one for mom-in-law today; was a little ticked off that there was a $2 activation fee — wazzup with THAT shit?), plus little things they can unwrap (a set of Corelle bowls for mom-in-law because she’s been wanting them, DVDs for dad-in-law and bro-in-law that they’ll be interested in). Also got the rest of the spouse’s gift — he lurks here sometimes so won’t post what I got 😉 .
Okay, time to go try out my new game…a present to myself… 🙂
Hi Pond dwellers! Just bopping in for a quick second to say hi to all. Here in SoCall the pineapple express is bringing the big surf in(for Calf. anyway)today and tomorrow. Eight feet today and 10-20 ft tomorrow. I am omly a block up so I can see it from my balcony but let me tell you it is loud! I love the sound of the punding surf and you don’t have to shovel it…lol! Hope you all have a fabulous night.
and I want it now!!!!
I can’t wait.
I also want something to melt away all the ice on my driveway. We’ve been slipping and sliding for over a week after a freezing rain turned into temps in the teens. My daughter today slipped and scraped/bruised her shin on our steps (luckily no head injury, broken bones, etc.)
I don’t hate winter. Just the cold, ice and snow is all.
The thing I want to melt away all the ice on my driveway is SUMMER! Glad your daughter got off with no more than a scraped shin, but ouch anyway. Is that a small daughter or a grown one?
Didn’t I read on one of your books that you split your time between Kansas and Florida? I’m wondering when the heck you go to Florida if not in the dead of winter. 🙂
I wish! That “fact” got onto the first cover of that first Florida book and I decided to let it stay there, figuring you can’t have too many people putting it out into the ether that I have a second home in Florida. <grin> Visualize whirled peas, and me in the sun! You can all come visit, since it will have been your imaginations that got me there. Try harder, please?
Oh, I see. Please visualize me on one of Andi’s mountains, but without any snow.
It makes me dizzy just to look at this. Who is that out there? And what were they doing there?
getting her wish.
(or it’s the Blue Dot not resisting the irresistible)
Wow. Fantastic. Just fantastic.
is one of the most interesting and unusual we’ve ever done. It’s in Yoho National Park in British Columbia and less 100 years ago the trail was completely underneath a glacier. Now it’s completely exposed. I hate to be grateful to global warming but hiking on a recently unglaciated terrain was fascinating.
Truly, I’ll bet!
I’m not much of a traveler & tend not to think about places I’d like to visit, but BC is one of the few.
Thanks for sharing that breathtaking image!
to do your visualizing — with my warped imagination you’d end up plopped down in Jacksonville in August in your long johns and bunny slippers.
At this moment, that sounds good. Pink bunny slippers?
of a change of scenery if being in Jacksonville at any time sounds good, let alone in August when it does its amazing impression of the fourth circle of hell.
And, of course, pink — just how warped do think my imagination is?
Does it mean that my imagination is more warped than yours if I can imagine your imagination being more warped than you can imagine it being?
I thought you’d say that.
Ten years old, and going on 21.
Just came from reading the comments over in the Ice Skating Cafe.
Andi, you’re pretty close … except for the hair colour! It’s light, but not fair. Shoulder length – yes. Fair skin – definitely. I don’t tan, I go straight to burn. Wow. You are pretty good at this.
And Second Nature, I think I like being ultra-feminine! Sounds like some special superpower… lol!
This is as far as I’m willing to go, not like you brave face-bearing souls. And more importantly, here’s my camera! 🙂
Just like I said — now I’m really surprised because I’m alway wrong. I can just feel myself feeling taller.
BTW, do you have the straw hat?
… no straw hat. I’ve got a really good MEC Sol Hat though (link for pic). That’s pretty close right?
It’s a fine hat (I’ve got a similar OR one) but the straw hat was the perfect finishing touch for my English woman in her garden image.
…totally ruined your mental image now? Let’s pretend it’s straw, and in the spring when I’m getting ready to start gardening again I’ll find a real straw one … :o)
I will just revise reality to fit my imagination. Yup, that’s a really nice hat you have.
No need to put up an evening open thread tonight, it’s already under way over here…
Let me simply tell you what my gift for today is: my son has just come back from the hospital and his last dose of chemiotherapy. So we’ll be able to enjoy a less stressful Christmas without the perspective of an hospital stay in the near future. His tumore is gone, hopefully for good, and his reeducation is going well. No need for utopia today. I’ll be out drinking champagne with my wife. –Jérôme
my heart from straight across the Atlantic, what fantastic news!
That is most excellent news!
Super happy holidays for Jerome and family!
Thanks for putting it up here Boo!
And all my photographs — ordered at midnight Saturday Night were waiting in the living room for me.
!!!
Maybe I’ll get the snapshots from the reception into Christmas cards and mailed tonight!!
Me and my sisters (in no particular order):
Wow, what a gorgeous bunch! And I know which one katiebird is, nyah nyah. Seriously, that’s a wonderful picture of five really beautiful women.
Seeing as katiebird has put her picture with you and on her patio, this is not a piece of information Bush would have to be willing to be impeached to get. Nyah, nyah.
Yeh!
shhhh. (blush) I guess I’d better not show you a photo of the whole gang. (blushing)
Thank you (….)
You look grand and very stylish. I was trying to decide which one is the relaxed sister and which one is the hitting sister (but there’s one — two?? — missing so maybe I shouldn’t try).
Nope, all the girls are there. Take a guess!
It’s the boys who aren’t there.
I must have got your bunch of sisters confused with Second Nature’s bunch of sisters.
Relaxed sister: 1st choice – next to you. 2nd choice – in the middle
Hitting sister: far left
Relaxed – middle
Hitting – second from the left
Ah, the memories.
And I should say that hitting sister is much calmer & wouldn’t do such a thing now. (I feel bad for revealing any of it)
That’s why you are nice person and I’m not — I thought it was to tell you my hitting sister story.
sentence is “I thought it was fun to tell you …”
Ahhh, but you haven’t posted a photo of said sister for everyone to identify.
It should be fun, but for some reason, I’m choking on the guilt of exposure.
Also, I think I’m dizzy with fear that Bush will freak out and destroy the world.
Here she is.
Fraid I can’t do anything about Bush, though.
(((Andi))
That’s the sweetest thing a person could do!! You are terrific! I love you.
It was my pleasure.
If only Bush were so easy.
Does she like hiking and the outdoors as much as you? I can’t tell from the photo if she is in party mode, or normally pretty formal.
The photo is from a group portrait from birthday party for her husband so it’s she’s posing but she is a a mostly indoors, sleeps late, likes to dress up, always wear makeup type person — sort of the complete opposite of me (my younger sister is much more like me).
Darn, I really thought about making 2nd from left a second choice because she looked like she could get tense (it’s her smile).
I was really torn on relaxed sister because middle sister has such untense body language but next to you sister looks like she is really having fun.
Actually, at a party, we’re all pretty relaxed and we really love all being together, so I could see it being hard to tell.
2nd isn’t well (MS) and is leaning on a cane, or if she isn’t leaning on a cane, she’s leaning on a sister. Which I know made her tense.
The funny thing about this is that she actually is 2nd. So, when we had to count off in the car — making sure no one was left behind. She was 2nd.
(smiling)
So you all had to count off in birth order?
And where are the brothers in the order?
Yep, counted of in birth order: girl, girl, girl, girl, boy, girl, boy, boy.
And we had a song also. The song is how all our friends learn the name of our siblings. Everyone can sing it. We did at the reception.
My youngest brother wasn’t born when we first sang it, so he was tacked on to the end, “And little Frank”
The picture would be 6, 2, 4, 3, 1 from right to left.
What a group of beautiful, beautiful women.
My, my, my!
(thank you)
(shuffling feet) (really)
I hope this won’t embarrass you (further?), but once in a while I catch a feminine image that makes me think: my God, I love women.
That’s the sense of a beautiful world. Your image inspired it.
Thank you very much.
I guess I wouldn’t have posted it if I wasn’t proud of being part of it. I’m very proud of the five of us. Even though sometimes I’m scared by the powerful emotions that fly between us.
We’re very close in age, the youngest is just 7 years younger than me. The middle 3 are each a year apart.
And we all talk or email nearly everyday.
2nd from the left sister keeps everyone up-to-date with Internet news, blog stuff and assorted outrages. So we hear from her a lot!
She sent this today:
Medium Lobster, at Fafblog, on the Zen of Iraq:
“Today’s koan comes to us from none other than the aged master George Bush,
bodhisattva of gratuitous bloodshed:
One day a young monk came before Bush and said to him, “There were no
weapons of mass destruction. There was no threat from Saddam. Why then is
there a war?”
Bush replied, “True, there was no threat to justify the war. But still there
was a threat, and the war is justified.”
A moment, now, to pause and reflect on the teachings of the war-buddha.
Like many of Bush’s parables, this one plays with the contrast between
reality and illusion: the tax cuts will shrink the deficit but the deficit
is bigger than ever, America does not torture but America must keep torture
legal. The worldly eye sees these as contradictions, lies, and distortions;
the enlightened mind sees them as multiple facets of the same transcendent
truth.
To those bound to the material world, there must be a material cause for a
material war: physical weapons held by a physical enemy, actual ties to
actual terrorists, a palpable and existing threat. The enlightened mind,
however, sees past the facade of the Real to the broader world of
Hypotheticality that lies beyond it. Thus, the enlightened man does not
inspect the world of matter for physical weapons. He searches, deep within
the unscapes of the mind, for Weapons of Mass Possibility, hypothetically
ready to be used by imaginary terrorists on the helpless pretend citizens of
the world. Bush does not invade Iraq to destroy weapons that aren’t there,
but to not-destroy the non-weapons that could have been there if things were
entirely different.”

Holy cow, that’s great!
(No religious pun intended.)
‘Bodhisattva of bloodshed’? What an incredibly weird concept! 🙂
!!!!She didn’t write it!!!!
She just sends the stuff along. But, still — I like it too.
I’m still trying to figure out if being a ‘bodhisattva of bloodshed’ means you postpone going straight to hell in order to bring everyone else with you.
Well, if the apparent shoe fits …
I’ll bet you do. How fortunate for you that she chooses to do this — & that you all share constant contact between you.
I have no siblings & I’ve always found sibling relationships — especially those between sisters — extremely powerful & very fascinating.
Two of my oldest friends are twin sisters. Talk about intense!
As I get older & more solitary I appreciate these relationships more & more as something I would’ve liked to experience. Without siblings, there are many things that no one else shares with you (parents aside).
You all look wonderful!
(smile) Thanks!
laugh, but gave up. My speculation is that they all do!
Thanks for sharing this beautiful bouquet of ladies!
You mean when the picture was being taken? It actually was weird. We all snuck out into the lobby with my camera.
The official photographer hadn’t taken any of “just us” and we wanted some. So dragging a cousin along to take the pictures, we went out there.
And people drifted by and noticed. Even the official photographer noticed.
By the time this picture was taken, there were like 6 cameras pointed at us.Like we were celebraties. Some of the photos in the collection are crazy. Everyone of us is looking at a different camera.
And that’s what we were laughing about.
I think you all make each other laugh since pinafore days 😉
Charge your glasses one and all and be upstanding. I propose a toast to Bush nominee, Judge John Jones III of the United States District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania who ruled today that “intelligent design” is in fact reworked creationism.
No more pandering to the Panda*.
My favorite moment in the trial is when Michael “Pseudo-Science” Behe of Lehigh University (that released a statement disavowing his views expressd in the trial proceedings as not in alignment with science) was forced to admit that under his “broad definition” of science astrology would fit as neatly as intelligent design.
Cheers! And here’s to the 11 reality-based Pennsylvania families who brought suit against Dover Public Schools and WON!
*Of Pandas and People
Three Texas plastic surgeons were playing golf together and discussing surgeries they had performed.
One of them said, “I’m the best plastic surgeon in Texas. A concert pianist lost 7 fingers in an accident, I reattached them, and 8 months later he performed a private concert for the Queen of England.”
One of the others said. “That’s nothing. A young man lost both arms and legs in an accident, I reattached them, and 2 years later he won a gold medal in 5 field events in the Olympics.”
The third surgeon said, “You guys are amateurs. Several years ago a cowboy who was high on cocaine and alcohol rode a horse head-on into a train traveling 80 miles an hour. All I had left to work with was the horse’s ass and a cowboy hat.
Now he’s President of the United States.”
Hey, all. So fine to see you all here.
It’s a rather quiet night here, maybe the last with temperatures in the single digits for a little while.
Tomorrow night at this time we’ll have reached the other side of the Solstice. Glory be!
I’ve been wrapped comfortably in a chewy little conundrum; I may have discovered a pathway through some very sticky realities.
Those are beautiful images up top, I must say 🙂
Hi everyone. Great pictures tonight — especially the family wedding pic. I love weddings because you can get everyone together for pictures — and everyone looks their best. Tuesdays are SO much better than Mondays.
My oncology final is OVER!!!! Twenty (yes, 20) fricking pages long!!!! It was so horrible that one of my friends banged his head on the table in frustration TWICE during the exam!!!
and now I’m free for a whole month!!! (Can you tell I’m a wee bit excited to have this over with?)
How about joining me for a margarita?
I’ll join you — Here’s a low carb version (whatever that means!)
I don’t know how you got through it. I admire you so much. I’m so happy and thrilled for you!!
Now, drink up!
My best friend from class and I started busting up laughing in the middle of it when our other friend sighed and banged his head on the desk. It was so awful, I got to page 14, and there were still 6 pages left…I thought it would never end. We had to go out for cocktails just to regain our ability to speak coherently…
But now I’m free to do what I want for a while!! And I will be done all my classes in June!!!
June! But what does done with classes mean? It doesn’t sound like graduation to me.
Clinical rotations are next…but no more exams.
I’m shooting for June 2007 graduation. I have to be done before the boys go!
I’ll join you too — but not the low carb version. Congratulations!! I’ve never taken an oncology exam but I remember feeling this way after my evidence exam in law school. Especially if its the last exam of the semester. (this IS the last exam, right?)
I have one online tomorrow…but that’s open book, little material, and an easy grader…
This was the bear of the fall classes. I’m so happy!
I am sure you “aced” it CabinGirl, the knowledge and expertise you have shared here shines through.
One step closer to being up to your elbows in pills and potions!
and frabjous day.
School’s Out (modified)
Well we got no choice
All the girls and boys
Makin all that noise
‘Cause they found new toys
Well we can’t salute ya
Can’t find a flag
If that don’t suit ya
That’s a drag
School’s out for 30 days
School’s out forever
School’s been blown to pieces
No more pencils
No more books
No more teacher’s dirty looks
Well we got no class
And we got no principles
And we got no innocence
We can’t even think of a word that rhymes
School’s out for 30 days
School’s out forever
School’s been blown to pieces
Thanks! It’ll be a lovely 30 days…
Hearty, hearty congratulations, CabinGirl!
Wow — the mind of the wench doth reel.
Thank you! 🙂
Yay for Cabin Girl, I will join you in the celebration..
Good for you CG….
Thanks! Are you all settled in in the new place?
No, I will be moving by the 30th, still no electricity, generator is not working, lots of problems to wade through till then…painting done, pretty much, but no carpet or new kitchen floor yet. So I will be most likely working day and night,….lol…feebly…next week…I have had help but not enough!!!!!!!!!!!!lol
Still have a sense of humor about life’s little changes.
Should I open a late night cafe?
the Nyquil is kicking in over herzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Get some sleep Mannee — You’ve done great!
open a late night/early morning cafe. SallyCat is doing the cafe tomorrow and she’s in california so she won’t be opening it very early.
And that’s a wrap for me. Good night.
Good night!
Come to the New Cafe!
