Of course! Obama is taking the guns away!
Our local news said that the NRA has issued its first public statement, to the effect that as an organization they intend to work toward making sure this type of event never happens again. They said there would be a televised news release on Friday. I haven’t checked online yet to confirm.
Between the caterwauling from the Rightwings and the squawking from the religious nutjobs, this massacre is apparently having a genuine impact. It has to be done. The voices of those victims cry out for change.
They probably support that idiot Congressman who said all teachers should have the right to concealed carry. That would be on a par with their thinking, i.e. everyone should carry a gun for self-defense. I wouldn’t doubt they think those poor little kids should have had gun training. That’s shockingly extreme, but I really wouldn’t put it past them.
I can see why they’d feel things have to change. Only 26 new notches in their belts?
At a minimum mentally impaired.
A big meme in that crowd is that their guns will protect them from a tyrannical government that takes away their liberty and rights. Yet none of them were on the front-lines protesting against the POTUS “kill list”
I got into it with some dumbfuck on FB that claimed he needs semiautomatics to “fight tyranny”.
Fact is, if the government DID decide to go full-on tyranny, no AR-15 is going to protect you. They’ll just send over a drone to drop a fucking bomb on your house, or maybe some helicopters with missiles, or maybe a fucking tank to make you into a pancake.
These schlubs should just lube up the barrel of their guns and fuck them, since all they’re doing is engaging in masturbatory fantasies of killing their own countrymen.
If the government did send stormtroopers to his house, they would be young, physically fit, and well-trained. And there would be LOTS of them. He wouldn’t stand a chance. Someone should tell him that Red Dawn is just a movie.
Obviously too stupid to know what tyranny would look like if it’s promulgated by a white man and too stupid even to recognize that even his assault weapon is the candified version of what the government has in its arsenal. IOW dumbfuck cubed.
Has anyone actually looked into the US history of gun culture? Just speaking out of ignorance here, as I’ve never looked into it, but I’ve always felt it revolves around “The Culture Wars” just like anything else. And by that I mean, “We need to have lots of weapons just in case the brown and/or black people decide to rise up and revolt against us.”
I think if you look at it in a modern day context, it would make sense:

I find the history of private violence and rebellion against government in the United States really doesn’t leave me with a lot of faith that the insurgents would be opposing tyranny. I think pretty much every other motivation for the private ownership of firearms is more sympathetic than one that’s rooted in a belief in some sort of right to armed revolt.

The SYG/carrying aggressor had no way to know whether his victim or any of the other people present weren’t carrying. He didn’t care! He was angry in FL (basically a free fire zone) and the possibility of other concealed carriers taking him out didn’t deter this idiot one whit, did it?

Ergo, America is over run by sociopaths.
Our reaction was a bit different. We held our community meeting tonight. It was well attended (80 people signed in but news reports said 50) and we all agreed to keep the conversation going. The meeting was the top story on our local Fox and CBS affiliate.
Everyone in the group agreed to keep meeting, learning together, and to take action.
My personal highlight was in our gun small group. We had people there who were strongly anti -gun generally, hunters who think we need to better regulate all guns but especially semi-automatic weapons, and one absolute gun owner. He said it was the first time he had ever had a civil conversation on this topic with people who disagree. We agreed that we will meet again next week and share information–data, study results, etc and start the discussion there.

In Michigan our enlightned governor Rick Snyder vetoed a bill that would have allowed concealed guns to be carried in public buildings (schhols, churches, stadiums). There just might be a connection to his 28 pt drop in ratings’ polls in the last week.
