A recent Central Intelligence Agency assessment found that the Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, had been significantly weakened by rising popular frustration with his American-backed government, American officials say.
The assessment found that Mr. Karzai’s government and security forces continued to struggle to exert authority beyond Kabul, said a senior American official who spoke only on the condition of anonymity. The assessment also found that increasing numbers of Afghans viewed Mr. Karzai’s government as corrupt, failing to deliver promised reconstruction and too weak to protect the country from rising Taliban attacks…
… A sharp increase in suicide attacks and roadside bombings over the past two years has persuaded many Afghans that security has sharply deteriorated under Mr. Karzai. The tactics appear to have migrated from Iraq, according to the official, probably via the Internet and people traveling between the countries.
“There’s not been a tradition of the suicide bombers,” the official said. “Psychologically, this has had a major impact.”
About 50% of likely voters in South Dakota oppose a state law (HB 1215) banning abortions except to save a woman’s life, while 41% of likely voters support the ban and 9% are undecided, according to a poll conducted earlier this week for KELO-TV, the AP/Kansas City Star reports
So this is looking good, right? Well, look at how many people think it allowed exceptions for rape, incest, or life of the mother (it doesn’t):
The telephone survey of 600 likely voters, conducted by Research 2000, also found that 36% said they believed the ban allowed for legal abortions in cases of rape or incest, 54% said it did not allow such exceptions and 10% did not know.
The lies and misinformation from anti-choicers work pretty well, don’t they? Too bad they aren’t required to tell the truth in their campign ads.
At this point, nobody should have any illusions about Mr. Bush’s character. To put it bluntly, he’s an insecure bully who believes that owning up to a mistake, any mistake, would undermine his manhood — and who therefore lives in a dream world in which all of his policies are succeeding and all his officials are doing a heckuva job. Just last week he declared himself “pleased with the progress we’re making” in Iraq.
In other words, he’s the sort of man who should never have been put in a position of authority, let alone been given the kind of unquestioned power, free from normal checks and balances, that he was granted after 9/11. But he was, alas, given that power, as well as a prolonged free ride from much of the news media.
The results have been predictably disastrous.
Go read the rest. He mentions what will happen if and when the Dems decide to issue subpoenas…bumpy ride, anyone?
but this is hilarious. Cliff Schecter goes off and off and off on the Republican party – calling them a “Pathetic bunch of criminal pedophiles”, among other things.
I heard something very weird this morning when I wish I hadn’t been awake. According to CNN, the Saddam trials won’t stop after they execute him. The plan is to try him 8-10 more times “in absentia” after he’s dead. As far as I know, this might be another innovative first for the Bush administration’s perversion of the language. I have never heard of anyone being tried in absentia after they were dead, especially by the people who killed them. Anyone else have an example?
I heard it repeated this morning. That struck me as very odd as well. My first thought… that the Republicans will try to schedule every one of those damn trials for future elections.
BBC Worldservice 5:00-6:00 AM EST today carried an interview with President Talabani’s aide that Talabani has stated privately and in public he will not sign the warrant to execute Saddam. “He respects his signature” ..having signed on with International lawyers some years ago against the death penalty”
The shadowy RNC-connected front group the “Progressive Policy Council” is still at it, trying to discourage liberal voters from going to the polls on Tuesday. And thanks to TPM reader JA, you can see their two recent mailings here and here.
The first PPC mailer, if you remember, went out this past weekend in Pennsylvania, attacking both Senate candidates for being too conservative on key progressive issues. We had an awful time finding any information about the group, but eventually discovered that they are represented by the former Deputy General Counsel to Bush-Cheney ’04.
I know that I got one of these mailings and tossed it. I probably got them all, but admittedly I don’t read all the mailings. Scumbag republicans.
Who’s to blame for Pastor Haggard’s fall from grace? His fat, lazy wife
[snip]
Writing in his personal blog, Driscoll offers his fellow pastors “some practical suggestions” on how to avoid the type of temptation that consumed Pastor Haggard. And near the top of his list?
“Most pastors I know do not have satisfying, free, sexual conversations and liberties with their wives. At the risk of being even more widely despised than I currently am, I will lean over the plate and take one for the team on this. It is not uncommon to meet pastors’ wives who really let themselves go; they sometimes feel that because their husband is a pastor, he is therefore trapped into fidelity, which gives them cause for laziness. A wife who lets herself go and is not sexually available to her husband in the ways that the Song of Songs is so frank about is not responsible for her husband’s sin, but she may not be helping him either.”
Uh-huh. Leave it to a fundamentalist Evangelical preacher to have such a profound understanding of human sexuality. Or as the inimitable sex columnist Dan Savage so aptly put it:
“I’m sure Ted Haggard is saying something along these lines to his wife right now: ‘Oh, honey… I wouldn’t have been having those meth-fueled ass-banging sessions with that gay hooker if you hadn’t have let yourself go like that!’ “
Values voters my ass… how about “bigot voters”. I remember when these people were considered lunatic fringe wackos. Make sure to thank a Republican for empowering these hateful little shitbags.
Interesting that his wife letting herself go (gag) made Pastor Ted hanker after some male prostitute action. But then again, mentioning that would blow Pastor Pig’s theory, wouldn’t it?
Sheesh…I just saw a picture of his wife on Jesus’ General, and I think she looks fabulous. He’s pretty weird looking with the perpetual lip curl, but she is very attractive.
I feel real sorry for her, and even worse for their two young sons. But for him, I have little sympathy.
FBI willing to go undercover in Congress if necessary
WASHINGTON – The new chief of the FBI’s Criminal Division, which is swamped with public corruption cases, says the bureau is ramping up its ability to catch crooked politicians and might run an undercover sting on Congress.
Assistant FBI Director James Burrus called the bureau’s public corruption program “a sleeping giant that we’ve awoken,” and predicted the nation will see continued emphasis in that area “for many, many, many years to come.”
So much evidence of wrongdoing is surfacing in the nation’s capital that Burrus recently committed to adding a fourth 15- to 20-member public corruption squad to the FBI’s Washington field office.
Yup. The Congressional vice-squad will be the dirtiest duty, dealing with some of the most evil criminals in history. I just have one question: Where is the White House undercover sting?
Hah. The White House will decree that the FBI is to fix the facts around the intelligence, and only focus on finding the corrupt Democrats so that Fox is able to continue it’s ‘fair and balanced’ reporting.
NASA has funded research into another “sunshade” proposal to combat global warming if its effects start to cascade faster than we can develop alternative power supplies. The plan would launch a constellation of trillions of small free-flying spacecraft, each the weight of a large butterfly, a million miles above Earth into an orbit aligned with the sun, called the L-1 orbit. The spacecraft would form a long, cylindrical cloud with a diameter about half that of Earth, and about 10 times longer. About 10 percent of the sunlight passing through the 60,000-mile length of the cloud, pointing lengthwise between the Earth and the sun, would be diverted away from our planet. The effect would be to uniformly reduce sunlight by about 2 percent over the entire planet, enough to balance the heating of a doubling of atmospheric carbon dioxide in Earth’s atmosphere.
Global concentrations of carbon dioxide in 2005 reached the highest levels ever recorded, the World Meteorological Organization (the UN’s weather agency) said Friday. “To really make CO2 level off we will need more drastic measures than are in the (1997) Kyoto Protocol today,” senior WMO scientist Geir Braathen told reporters.
That is despite the fact that the Bush government is considering changing laws so that anyone who lowers their energy use will be arrested. Just kidding! The same way that Ford found itself way behind the public on the hybrid cars, alternative energy systems are becoming the hot thing.
My brother is number 2 in a company in Philly that deals in HVAC and environment control for large industry. The second Pa offers its’ citizens some sort of rebates or financial help for alternative energy systems, they’ll be getting into the installation of wind/solar systems for home owners. (I told him I want mine to be the model home and I’d better get a good deal or else.) As always, the people are way ahead of the government.

Abbott to buy Kos Pharmaceuticals for 3.7 bln usd

ABBOTT PARK, Illinois (AFX) – Abbott said it has agreed to buy Kos Pharmaceuticals Inc, a New Jersey-based specialist in treating chronic cardiovascular, metabolic and respiratory disease, for 78 usd per share in cash, or a total 3.7 bln usd.
The union representing 1,900 hourly workers at Southern Arizona’s largest private employer went on strike against Raytheon Missile Systems at 12:01 a.m. today.
By a vote of 1,018 to 111 on Sunday, the International Association of Machinists Local 933 approved the strike.
“That’s probably one of the strongest mandates this local lodge has had in its 50-year history, and the message is clear,” said Bobby Martinez, Local 933’s directing business representative, after the vote at the Tucson Convention Center. “Our members were tired of feeling like a second-class citizen working for a world-class missile manufacturer.” – linkage

While millions of Jews and others deemed “undesirable,” were slaughtered, these children were carefully selected for their Aryan qualities and brought into the world in comfortable surroundings, well away from the Allied bombing raids.

BRAD BLOG EXCLUSIVE DOCUMENTS: ‘THE PENTAGON PAPERS OF E-VOTING’ — THE LONG-SOUGHT 2003 STATE OF MARYLAND’S ‘SAIC REPORT’ ON DIEBOLD SECURITY VULNERABILITIES — NOW RELEASED IN FULL!
Previously Unreleased 200-Page Report Said to Document Some 180 Security Flaws and Recommendations Made to Diebold and the State
Still Unclear as to Who Made Changes, Additions, Redactions to Publicly Released 40-Page Version of Report…
The original, never-before-released SAIC report was nearly 200 pages in all, and details a number of extraordinary security vulnerabilities found in Diebold’s AccuVote-TS (touch-screen) voting systems as deployed by the state of Maryland initially in 2002. The version of the SAIC report that was eventually released to the public, after extreme redaction, was a mere 38 pages long.[snip]

Election reform is the only way to guarantee that Republicans will stop stealing them. National reform. Begin at the bottom and go right to the top of the process, honestly look at ALL vulnerabilities, close all loopholes and institute laws making it impossible for ANYONE to ever steal another election. An honest election process would probably put an end to the Rovian dream of one party rule.

The United Nations will host a conference on climate change in Nairobi, Kenya, starting today to discuss ways to improve the climate amid British warnings of a worldwide disaster should governments fail to cooperate on global warming.
A team of researchers in Britain and the US has come up with a revolutionary new aircraft design that could make a dramatic contribution to curbing climate change. The plane is both radically quieter and is 35% more fuel-efficient than the best current designs.
One of Britain’s top climate scientists tells the BBC that the language of chaos and catastrophe regarding climate change has got out of hand, as the debate in Europe between climate change scientists and climate skeptics has now shifted to being between climate change scientists and climate alarmists. Meanwhile, New Scientist reports that climate change skeptics have by no means admitted defeat and plan to savage the latest report by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, due in February 2007.
US demand for clean energy is growing fast. In fact, wind energy developers are ordering so many windmills, they’re running into a supply problem. And the solar market is booming as new technologies offer alternatives to silicon, as silicon supplies remain tight.
