I just watched freshman Republican Senator Mike Johanns of Nebraska give a speech in the Senate where he said the people of his state were too afraid of terrorists for him to support the transfer of Guantanamo prisoners to either Kansas or Colorado supermax detention centers.
We are not even talking about these prisoners being housed in his state. According to Johanns, the people of Nebraska are collectively so cowardly that they can’t sleep at night knowing that there are alleged terrorists being held hundreds of miles away in another state in a super maximum-security prison.
I don’t believe the people of Nebraska are afraid of any such thing. But, I’ll tell you what. I’m happy to take them here in Pennsylvania. Or you can put them in Ohio, West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, or New York. I’ll sleep just fine. In fact, I’ll sleep better knowing we’re not violating due process anymore.
But the Legion of Doom will surely attempt to break them out of Supermax!
No doubt. With dirty bombs.
Or Solomon Grundy. Same thing.

KHARTOUM, Sudan (Reuters) – Lawyers from the Pentagon’s legal office met families of Sudanese Guantanamo detainees and former prisoners to explore ways to free those still held in custody, people involved in the meetings said this week.
A senior Sudanese Foreign Ministry official told Reuters the delegation said it would recommend to U.S. authorities that the remaining prisoners be freed after listening to first-hand accounts of how the released detainees had been coping in Sudan.
“The lawyers are defending them and they came to see the experiences of the detainees who have been released — how they have integrated into society, how well Sudan has treated them and how they do not pose any threat to America or the world.”

Washington has had tense relations with the Islamist government of Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who came to power in a 1989 coup. The United States imposed economic sanctions on Sudan in 1997 and labeled it a “state sponsor of terrorism.”
Bashir has however struck a more conciliatory tone in his recent comments on the United States.

I grew up in Nebraska, I have plenty of friends still there, and to paraphrase 300, “THIS…IS…BARNSTUFF!”
Oh, I agree. Complete barnstuff.
missed this 60 minutes segment, and that’s why his panties are in a twist…Supermax: A Clean Version Of Hell:
yeah, they’re gonna be a huge threat…¡jezeus!…talk about grasping at straws.
I’d invite them to be housed in the State of California, but we have no more empty jail cells. Sorry.
I found the transcript.
Here’s the part where he basically says his constituents are too afraid to let GITMO detainees be housed in neighboring states:
I’ll sleep a lot better too, Booman! Send em’ straight to Massachusetts! I’m fine with that.
