NASA’s Mars rover Opportunity has rolled up to the rim of Victoria crater after a 21-month trek across the vast expanse known as Meridiani Planum. And 250 million miles away on Earth, the view — according to astronomer, geologist and mission principal investigator Steve Squyres — is “just breathtaking … the most spectacular thing we’ve seen.” From the rover’s perch, the crater offers a visual timeline of Martian history in the layers upon layers of exposed rock.
Ozone hole update – Record ozone loss in 2006 over south pole: Ozone measurements made by satellite have revealed the ozone loss of 40 million metric tons on 2 October 2006 has exceeded the record ozone loss of about 39 million metric tons for 2000.
PAKISTAN:
Taliban Back in Business in Border Areas
President Gen. Pervez Musharraf’s controversial peace deal with Pakistan-based Taliban has already resulted in a new assertiveness by the `Islamic Scholars’ in the Waziristan agency which borders Afghanistan. [snip]
On Monday, the Taliban reopened its office in Miramshah and distributed pamphlets in the town asking the local people for cooperation in `dealing with crime and criminal elements’ and also asked for contributions.
After fighting the Taliban in Pakistan’s rugged border areas as part of support for the U.S. -led `war-on-terror’ in Afghanistan, Musharraf signed a truce with the `scholars’ in June and followed it up this month with a comprehensive pact under which the Taliban would stop launching attacks across the border on U.S. and allied troops. [snip]
With the new peace deal, Musharraf has effectively put an end to the two-year-old military campaign to track down remnants of the Taliban which had sought shelter in Waziristan and other border areas after being ousted as the rulers of Afghanistan by the U.S. army in late 2001. The Taliban are now showing every intention of taking over administrative control of the Pashtun-dominated semi-autonomous North and South Waziristan.
This puts the lie to Musharraf’s denials that this would empower the Taliban.
In 2002, TIME Scooped Woodward — and 9/11 Panel — With Meeting Details
The New York Times reported on Sunday that “details of the meeting on July 10, 2001” between former CIA director George Tenet, then-national security adviser Condolleezza Rice, and Tenet counterterror chief Cofer Black, “were first reported last week in a new book by Bob Woodward.” It proceeds to quote outraged members of the 9/11 Commission who were “furious” they had not heard of the meeting before.
In fact, as reader KF notes, it appears Time magazine reported that meeting in August 2002, nearly two years before the panel released its final report — and more than four years before Woodward’s book, “State of Denial,” was published.
This is what happens when corporate media largely ignores big stories. This is why much of what’s coming out in Woodward’s book is such a shock to many but known or suspected to those of us who read the alternative press regularly.

via Ned Lamont’s Blog They want Joe to switch sides (Part II) The Hill reports Joe is considering “defection to the GOP” if he is stripped of his seniority:
“Lieberman said he would keep his senior position in the caucus, even though he lost Connecticut’s Democratic primary, and is running against Democratic nominee Ned Lamont, whom the Senate Democratic leadership has endorsed.
“That’s what I’ve been told,” said Lieberman in an interview Friday, before Congress recessed for the election. “Caucuses like to keep as many members as they can, not discourage membership,” implying that leaders risk his defection to the GOP if they strip him of seniority.”

Is Doh LIEberman really a GOP supporter in disguise? Who would’ve known?

What, me worry? Some time this month, the number of Americans will surpass 300 million, a milestone that raises environmental impact questions for the only major industrial nation whose population is increasing substantially.
What, me worry? Part 2: The gap between what countries are doing to address climate change and what scientists say they should be doing is widening, Britain’s Environment Minister David Miliband, said on Friday.
