1. Sept. deadline approaching for humanist grants
The Institute for Humanist Studies Grant Fund annually awards more than $100,000 in grants to humanist, atheist and freethought organizations throughout the world. Humanist groups have until 5 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on Friday, Sept. 9 to submit project applications and supporting documents. Grants are awarded in January for projects in 2006. MORE
2. Criticism of suicide bombers censored at the UN
On July 26, the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU) attempted to call on the United Nations to condemn killing in the name of religion. According to a statement issued by the IHEU, the effort was prevented by Islamic members of the Sub-Commission on Human Rights in Geneva. MORE
3. Seeking altruistic atheists and humanist humanitarians

4. More humanist art comes to IHS
This August, the Humanist, by Anita Weschler, will be on permanent display at the Institute for Humanist Studies. Pioneering the use of fiberglass in sculpture, the Humanist statue depicts a man of ambiguous race, with a stance poised for action and both arms out-stretched, one for giving and one for receiving. 5. Armstrong reaching the top without God
For the past few months Lance Armstrong has been in the media nearly every day. While Armstrong’s pursuit of his seventh consecutive Tour de France victory has dominated the news, the media have not made much of an issue of his nonbelief. MORE

The Institute for Humanist Studies is proud to introduce two new summer interns. MORE
7. Van Gogh’s killer sentenced to life
The killer of Dutch freethinker Theo van Gogh will spend the rest of his life in prison…During his trial, Bouyeri openly confessed to the murder and vowed to do the same again if given the chance. Clutching a copy of the Koran, he told the court that “the law compels me to chop off the head of anyone who insults Allah and the prophet.” MORE
8. The rise of humanism in Iran
In her guest column, Maryam Namazie writes about the rise of humanism in Iran. Namazie is the community services officer for the British Humanist Association. She is active with the Organisation of Women’s Liberation in Iran. MORE
