If you are a regular reader you already know that the Republican National Congressional Committee (RNCC) is worse than broke…it’s in debt. And, despite being a candidate for the bankruptcy bill’s harsh prescriptions, the RNCC has dumped nearly $400,000 into the OH-05 special election. Ohio’s fifth district is supposed to be rock-ribbed Republican territory. Bush carried it in 2004 with 61% of the vote, and the recently deceased Paul Gillmor won re-election in 2006 by a comfortable 57%-43% margin.
But things are not all roses for the Republicans in the fifth district. Gov. Ted Strickland and Sen. Sherrod Brown both carried the district in 2006, even as Gillmor was coasting.
It’s hard to say whether or not the Democrat in the race, Robin Weirauch, has a chance to win. It would certainly upset common wisdom and expectations if she pulled out a victory. But, as far as I’m concerned, we’ve already won by forcing the Republicans to spend nearly $400,000 on a seat that should be safe.
