I threw C-SPAN on for background noise this afternoon while I watched the first snowstorm of the season out the window. When I wasn’t admiring the highlights in Barbara Boxer’s hair I was jarred to see the guilty faces of Sens. Larry Craig and David Vitter on my teevee. It has a hearing of the Environmental & Public Works Committee…and the Republicans were represented by petty criminals. I kept waiting for the vice cops to bust in and break up the proceedings. And that is a metaphor for the entire Republican revolution. It’s leaders are gone…most of them anyway…and, yet, the Bush administration churns on, grinding up everything in its path.
The list of the vanquished is long: Tony Blair, Silvio Berlusconi, José MarÃa Aznar, John Howard, Bill Frist, Dennis Hastert, Tom DeLay, Rick Santorum, George Allen, Conrad Burns, Colin Powell, George Tenet, Paul Wolfowitz, Richard Perle, Douglas Feith, Richard Armitage, Duke Cunningham, Robert Ney, Larry Franklin, Alberto Gonzales, Rick Renzi, Richard Pombo, Mike DeWine, Jim Talent, Trent Lott, J.D. Hayworth, Wayne Allard, John Warner, Pete Domenici, Barbara Cubin, John Rowland, George Ryan, Scooter Libby, Don Sherwood, Katherine Harris, Jerry Weller, Ernie Fletcher, Bob Taft, Bill Janklow, Mark Foley, David Safavian.
Maybe we’ll feel better if we just compile a list of the various Republicans that have lost their power during the Bush years.
Who did I forget?
