The US soccer team just tied England 1-1. And they actually had more possession time and outplayed England in the first half. I didn’t think the US had the same crisp passing in the second half, playing in a bit of defensive crouch. It wasn’t until the second half that England looked like a superior team, and the difference was slight. They have an easier time creating scoring opportunities than the US, but their goaltending is vastly inferior. I was surprised that the US side was willing to press the attack. That hasn’t been the case in previous World Cups against top teams.
For a few brief moments it looked America might even pull off an upset. On the English side, the match will be remembered for the sloppy goal that their goaltender Robert Green allowed. It was the type of goal you might see in a middle school game. The UK press is going to be apoplectic about this result, and they’ll be questioning all kinds of moves that their coach made. The Americans are ecstatic to get a point out of their hardest match of the preliminary round.
The US plays again on the eighteenth, against Slovenia. England plays Algeria the same day.
