Jim Newell ran out of steam. Eric Loomis didn’t even try. Who can blame them? When you’re dealing with Mark Judge, you just have to raise your game to an entirely other level. You can be cruising along, dishing out the snark at a professional pace, making offhand references to the Defenestrations of Prague that somehow work, on cruise-control, really…
…and then it hits you like crash course dummy. What you’re reading…what’re you mocking, is so stupid and racist and juvenile and historic in its foolishness, that it just defies snark. The original content actually is snark. It’s unintentional snark maybe, but what, really, is the difference? As Mr. Loomis remarked, “I mean there is no way that the greatest comedy writer in America could create a parody of the conservative worldview better than this.” Nor can the greatest snark-artist do better than the thing itself.
Judge’s column is so bad that it would be worthy of celebration, or perhaps a special display in the Newseum, if it weren’t for its poorly-diguised racism. Because the whole thing boils down to, “I saw a white baseball player stretch a single into a double because a lazy negro was loafing in right-field, and this is both a symbol and omen for everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen in this country.”
