The following are excerpts from Hu Jintao’s speech to CPPCC members on cross-Straits relations in March 2005:
“We will continue to make our greatest efforts with the utmost sincerity to seek the prospects of peaceful reunification. Meanwhile, we will never tolerate ‘Taiwan independence’ and never allow the ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist forces to make Taiwan secede from the motherland under any name or by any means.”
You seriously want us, in Taiwan, to believe “utmost sincerity”, Hu Jintao? The only “peaceful reunification” you envision is the annexation of 23 million Taiwanese citizens — with 800+ missiles at your behest and a 2004 law stating that these 800+ missiles will be used unless Taiwan complies.
Taiwan, by the way, is already “de facto” independent. It has NEVER been ruled by the PRC — EVER.
“At present, some new and positive factors that are conducive to checking the ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist activities have emerged in the cross-Straits relations, and the tense situation across the Straits has developed certain signs of relaxation.
“However, the struggle against the ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist forces and their activities remains stark and complex.”
The “new” and “positive” factors you speak of, Hu Jintao, are elements within the opposition party in Taiwan (which has been defeated twice in the 2000 and 2004 Presidential elections). These “factors” include KMT leader Ma Jing-yeou and former leader Lien Chan — who has just paid another visit to China.
“Although the mainland and Taiwan are not yet reunified, the fact that the two sides belong to one and the same China has remained unchanged since 1949. This is the status quo of cross-Straits relations.”
You are historically mistaken, Hu Jintao. Taiwan has NEVER been ruled by the PRC-China. In fact, Taiwan has been outside of China’s rule for quite some time. Throughout its long and tumultuous history, it was colonized by the Portugese, the Dutch, and in the 20th century, the Japanese.
The current status-quo has never stated that Taiwan belongs, in any shape way or form to the PRC-China. In fact, it is your country, Hu Jintao, who has changed the status-quo — by increasing your military threat significantly against Taiwan and by creating the Anti-secession law that does not permit Taiwan to be outside of PRC-China territory.
“Dialogues and talks between the two sides of the Taiwan Straits can be resumed immediately, and can be carried out on whatever topics and issues, as long as the Taiwan authorities acknowledge the ‘1992 Consensus'”.
As former opposition leader Lien Chan has made obvious on his recent trip to your country — you continue to be unwilling to publicly clarify what the so-called “1992 consensus” really means. The opposition in Taiwan would have us believe that it is a “consensus” to “agree to disagree” on the definition of “one-China” (if you can call that a “consensus”). However, when President Chen asked opposition leader Ma Ying-jeou to ask China to clarify its position on the so-called “1992 consensus”, he would not follow through. Neither would Lien Chan. With this notable unhelpfulness from your friends in the opposition and with your silence on the issue, Hu Jintao, we can only assume that you will NOT negotiate with Taiwan on equal footing.
By the way, the so-called “1992 consensus” has recently been proven to being a fabrication by the man who made-up the term — KMT legislator, Su Chi.

“We welcome the efforts made by any individuals or any political parties in Taiwan toward the direction of recognizing the one-China principle.
“No matter who he is and which political party it is, and no matter what they said and did in the past, we’re willing to talk with them on issues of developing cross-Straits relations and promoting peaceful reunification as long as they recognize the one-China principle and the ‘1992 Consensus'”.
Hu Jintao, you clearly mean that you will welcome the efforts made by your lackies in Taiwan — namely the KMT opposition party and its leader Ma Ying-jeou. They favour unification, afterall. Despite President’s continued requests to hold talks with you on equal footing — you refuse and, what’s more, you have increased your military threat against this democratic nation.
Again, your version of the so-called “1992 consensus” has not been clarified since 1992. Don’t you think this clarification would be helpful to cross-straights relations? Or can you not avoid playing political games because you wish to hide the truth from the people of Taiwan and the world?
“Peaceful reunification does not mean that one side ‘swallows’ the other, but that the two sides confer on reunification through consultation on an equal footing.”
Huh?! Negotiations on Taiwan being a province of Taiwan means that the two sides consult by being equal? If this is not double-speak, I don’t know what is.
“As long as there is still a ray of hope for peaceful reunification, we’ll do our utmost to achieve it.”
Who decides when this “ray of hope” is gone? Oh, right. You do.
“The more the ‘Taiwan independence’ secessionist forces want to isolate the Taiwan compatriots from us, the more closely we have to unite with them.”
TRANSLATION: The more Taiwan excercises its democracy by electing independence minded governments, the more we must be willing to annex them.
“We hope the leader of the Taiwan authorities could earnestly fulfill the ‘five no’s’ commitment he reaffirmed on Feb.24, as well as his commitment of not seeking ‘legalization of Taiwan independence’ through the ‘Constitutional reform’.
“We hope that he could show to the world, through his own concrete action, that this was not an empty word or mere lip service which can be forsaken at will.”
I’m sure you have been happy to hear that President Chen has indeed re-validated his committment to the 4 no’s and one without.
Now, I wonder if you could “earnestly fulfill” your committment to “sincerity” when you state that you wish a peaceful solution to the cross-straights situation by removing the 800+ missiles pointed at the island.
“China is the home to the 1.3 billion Chinese people including the 23 million Taiwan compatriots, and both the mainland and Taiwan belong to the 1.3 billion Chinese people including the 23 million Taiwan compatriots.
“Any issue involving China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be decided collectively by the entire 1.3 billion Chinese people.”
Hmm…I see you left out “23 million Taiwan compatriots” in your last sentence.
I guess you have, indeed, clarified what the so-called “1992 consensus” truly means. It means “you do as we say”.
Well, here’s something your 1.3 billion Chinese people can’t do in your country, but what 23 million people in Taiwan can:
