Some of the attorneys involved say they plan to file motions to quash the indictments.
WILLACY COUNTY, TX (AP) – A grand jury in South Texas indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in local federal detention centers.
The Associated Press reported that a Willacy County indictment criticizes Cheney’s investment in the Vanguard Group (pdf-5MB).
The company allegedly holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers in Willacy County.
The rural Texas county has several prisons and is located about 35 miles north of where the Rio Grande empties into the Gulf of Mexico.
The Associated Press reports that the indictment accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and “at least misdemeanor assaults” on detainees by working through the prison companies.
Former U.S. Attorney General Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.
Another indictment charges Texas State Sen. Eddie Lucio Jr. with profiting from his public office by accepting honoraria from prison management companies.
