A minor milestone, there have now been 40 of these diaries. I couldn’t imagine how I would do 10 when I started. Thanks for tuning in each week.
This week I will be completing the painting of the old nineteenth century Elephant Hotel in my town, Somers, New York. It is currently used to house the town government. It is seen in the photo below.
Once again, this piece is being done for an exhibition of residents’ artwork depicting the structure, in celebration of the Elephant Hotel being listed on the National Register.

I have actually now completed the work. As I had said in earlier installments, this piece presented a time constraint. In fact, I was completing the work on the night before I had to hand it over for the display. Please keep this in mind when you look at the final piece below. (If I had more time with the piece, I would have changed a few things, including the large tree shadow. I would have made it less solid, with light coming through in a few places. Some of the details on the hotel would be different also. But I had to leave time for drying and then glaze and frame it.) The completed painting is seen directly below.
After completing foreground and background, I added the various details. The tree has needles, the hotel has many details and the sky and lawn are complete. Though it may not be visible here, the side of the hotel is a slightly different color from the front.
