Hi, and welcome to Simple Answers to Simple Questions. Today’s guest, The New York Times asks a simple question.
The Gospel According to Marianne Williamson
Do spirituality and self-help have a political constituency?
The simple answer is “no.”
The more complicated answer is “No, because elections should be too important and too serious to include snake oil salesmen, quacks, and charlatans.”
She told the crowd the story of David and Goliath, about how she’s going to be like David and defeat Trump with just a slingshot. “We’re going to get him right between the eyes,” she said. “David got Goliath in his third eye, where he wasn’t prepared — where he had no defense.” The third eye, she explained, was Trump’s ego and his inability to see clearly. It was his instinct to divide the country along the old fault lines of hatred and greed and apathy toward suffering. The slingshot, which was small but mighty, was, of course, love. Love was her entire platform. She believed that if we were to look at all the country’s problems through the prism of love, we could undo everything from poverty to climate change to the immigration crisis.
The meta answer is actually a question: “why the Hell are you giving this unserious grifter a platform?”
Democratic presidential candidate Marianne Williamson offered prayers for those who’ve been impacted by Hurricane Dorian, a message posted on Twitter Wednesday that replaced an earlier bizarre tweet about how “visualization,” “meditation” and the “power of the mind” contributed to the storm’s change of course that prevented it from directly barreling into the southeastern United States.
“The Bahamas, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas…may all be in our prayers now. Millions of us seeing Dorian turn away from land is not a wacky idea; it is a creative use of the power of the mind,” the author and spiritual leader wrote. “Two minutes of prayer, visualization, meditation for those in the way of the storm.”
Hours later, the post was deleted and replaced with: “Prayers for the people of the Bahamas, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas. May the peace of God be upon him and their hearts be comforted as they endure the storm.”
The unfiltered, NSFW version of this question is “what the fucking FUCK is this fuckery??”
