This is a question that has puzzled me for a long time.Even though I believe Bush is a fraud, I never thought he was stupid. So, his sheer desperation to invade Iraq was a surprise, especially because of the mental gymnastics he had to perform to get there.

Then, a week ago, I happened to read an interview with Matt Simmons, who is an investment banker in Houston specializing in energy related investments. In that interview, Mr.Simmons states something that may provide a clue to the question I have posed in the title to this diary. He says that 90% of the oil in Saudi Arabia comes from just five monster fields which are more than 50 years old. One of them, the Ghawar field, has been squeezed for many years with increasingly sophisticated technologies and looks like it would be extinct soon. That would send shock waves throughout the world.

To prevent that panic, the Bush administration in collusion with the Saudis may very well have set up a ruse to deceive/pacify the world that all is well with the Saudi oil supply. And the scheme would work if the Iraqi oil had a Saudi label put on it.Iraq, in essence, would replace the Saudi oil that is depleting fast.Iraq’s own large reserves have yet to be exploited fully; that and its proximity to the Saudi fields makes this ruse possible.Seizing the Iraqi fields and calling it a Saudi resource would prevent worldwide panic and questions that the Bush administration is incapable or unwilling to answer.

The commonality of the Saudi and U.S. interests, makes this case compelling for me.Anyone have any thoughts?
