Here’s what at stake with the Alito nomination: The Congress and the President will gain power. Ordinary Americans will lose power.
We would have fewer rights, as the Constitution becomes a weaker document – imposing fewer restrictions on the government. Our rights to privacy, our rights to free and fair elections, our rights to freedom from discrimination, and our personal freedoms will be reduced. In exchange, Presidential war powers, police powers, special interest powers and the power of the Religous Right to impose their values on others will increase.
The police will have more power to arrest people at political protests. The President will have more powers to arrest people in secret, without charges, access to lawyers and access to the Court. Corporations will have more power to pollute. Radical Right churches will have more power to get government into people’s bedrooms and to impose a narrow moral order on the lives of Americans. There will be more searches witout warrants. The private medical lives of Americans will become politicized. More government money will go to more churches. States will be allowed to promote disrimination against gays and lesbians, persons of color, women and other minorities.
