A few days ago, I reported on the, Palestinian soccer team banned in the UK.

http://www.boomantribune.com/story/2007/8/24/102341/679

Now we find grassroots organizations like the British Palestinian Solidarity Committee calling for a ban of the Israeli soccer team, which is scheduled to play the British team next month.

First, the Palestinian Solidarity Committee would like to respond to and answer the question,

Why Boycott Israel?

The Palestinian people are experiencing their fortieth year of military occupation. The siege by the Israeli army and the economic blockade have devastated their daily lives so that ‘normal’ life is impossible.

Israel operates an entrenched system of racial Apartheid against its own non-Jewish inhabitants and has been illegally occupying Palestinian land in the West Bank, Gaza Strip, East Jerusalem and the Golan Heights since 1967. It has sought to further annex these lands and has systematically transferred its own civilian population into these occupied territories in contravention of international law. Israel continues to build the illegal Apartheid wall, annexing vast swathes of Palestinian land in the West Bank and creating Palestinian ghettos, despite the ruling of the International Court of Justice that it is illegal

180 Palestinian organisations and unions, in response to Israeli onslaught, have called for a campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against Apartheid Israel.

Okay, so we now understand why the boycott is being proposed. Here is the call:

Call for the Suspension of the Israeli national team from International Football

Demonstrate 3pm – 5pm Sept 8th against the England-Israel Euro 2008 Qualifier at Wembley

England will be playing against Israel in a Euro 2008 qualifier on Saturday 8 September in London at Wembley

The Boycott Israeli Goods campaign and Jews for Boycotting Israeli Goods will be organising actions in London in support of a sporting boycott of Apartheid Israel. We are also calling on groups to organise their own actions. There will be a vigil at Wembley in the two hours preceding the event.

http://bigcampaign.org/index.php?page=home

Notably, the British have no difficulty using the term Apartheid, nothing like what Jimmy Carter experienced for just intimating such a social system in a future Palestine, let alone inside Israel, which he denied.

This petition to boycott the Israeli soccer team (football in England) is rationalized as an attempt to influence Israeli politics until it changes its harsh policies toward the Palestinians who continue to live under military occupation and begins to negotiate in good faith for a real two state solution.

Kick Israeli Apartheid Out of Football – Fair Play for the Palestinians

We the undersigned urge the Football Association (FA), the Union of European Football Association (UEFA) and the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) to take appropriate measures to ban the national Israeli football team from all international fixtures until the state of Israel entirely complies with International Law and relevant United Nations resolutions to end Israeli occupation.

For the past 60 years, Israel has been destroying Palestinian lives, livelihoods and homes daily, is refusing to stop the building of illegal settlements and the apartheid wall on stolen land. Palestinians love football but both amateur and professional players and the Palestinian Football Association are unable to function fully because of the occupation. Children have been killed and injured by the Israeli army while playing football. International and national football organizations must take action to support the Palestinians right and ability to participate at every level of the game.

INVASION OF ISRAELI STATE EXPORTER
At 1pm on Sunday 15th July 2007 a group of Palestine solidarity activists entered the depot of Carmel Agrexco and proceeded to leaflet workers about their employers’ exports from the occupied Palestinian territories. The Israeli flag was taken down from outside the depot and a Palestinian flag flown. Two protesters locked on to a truck in the forecourt of the premises and remained locked-on for four hours. Police told activists that no-one was going to be arrested because the company wouldn’t ‘let them play’. Carmel Agrexco have repeatedly chosen not to prosecute activists who disrupt their business after a court case from 2004-6 threatened to expose the company’s complicity in war crimes under the International Criminal Court Act 2001
