From the point of view of Rice, Cheney and Bush, Iran is the embodiment of the threat of World War III. Therefore they are starting sanctions on Iran, which, as we know from Iraq, is really a ploy to get Iranian response – then we can invade and get this war going.
So Iran, which has invaded no one for centuries; which has an army small enough to be overwhelmed by, say, Israel in a day or two; which has fewer tanks, trucks and other machines of war than, say, Luxembourg; which has a President who doesn’t really run his country, but is compared by our Vice President and the NeoCons to Hitler – this Iran is what we are to believe is preparing to attack us on our own shores if we don’t do something now.
Either the Administration thinks we are that easy to scare (and they have been right before – look at Iraq), or they are going to move in the direction they choose without support of the voters or Congress or Europe (although they will claim they are going in with a “coalition of the willing”) or anyone else.
And Giuliani is now saying that, if he is elected, he will bomb Iran as one of his first endeavors. McCain is ready to take Iran down, too. Even Democratic candidates are not firmly saying that they will not lead us into more war.
The real threat of Iran is that it will be the steamy compost used by Bush to fertilize his garden of death. And he will drag us all into it.
If we act now we can avoid the stench getting on us again. Constant contact with our Congresspeople, constant pressure on candidates, keeping the subject alive in the blogs which will keep it alive in the press… there’s lots we can do. And we’d better get busy.
