Shooter kills two US airmen in attack on military bus at Frankfurt Airport

FRANKFURT, Germany (Deutsche Welle) – Two US servicemen have been killed, and two more wounded at Frankfurt airport. A young man, who has since been arrested, opened fire on their US military bus outside Terminal 2 at Germany’s busiest hub.

The US Air Force has since confirmed that all four of the victims were airmen, but spokeswoman Major Beverly Mock said she could release no further details on their identity until their next of kin have been notified.

“We don’t know the details, but I would like to express how shocked I am,” Chancellor Angela Merkel said in a joint news conference with visiting Portuguese prime minister, Jose Socrates. “We will do all we can to investigate what happened. It is a dreadful incident and Germany will do all it can to bring clarity to this matter.”

The interior minister for the state of Hesse, Boris Rhein, confirmed earlier police reports that the presumed shooter had been arrested. Rhein said the suspect was 21, had roots in Kosovo, and lived in the Frankfurt area.

Early stages of investigation

Police had already announced that they had taken a young man from Kosovo into custody. The assailant had reportedly fled the scene after the attack, but was overpowered and arrested in an airport terminal.

Kosovan gunman ‘shouted Islamic slogans’ before shooting dead two U.S. airmen on bus at Frankfurt airport

(Mail Online/ABC News) – When he opened fire, the gunman shouted “Allah Akbar,” according to sources. He fired nine times, killling two and critically wounding two others before the gun jammed and he was subdued by other passengers. While being wrestled into submission, the suspect shouted either “Jihad Jihad” or “Allah Akbar,” sources said.

One of the dead was the bus driver, military officials said. The servicemembers who were attacked were members of a Security Forces team assigned to RAF Lakenheath in Great Britain. They were en route to support Overseas Contingency Operations, although their exact destination was not stated.

Rep. Patrick Meehan, R-Pa., said at a House Homeland Security Committee hearing today that the shooting looks like it could be a terrorist attack. Meehan said he was briefed by his staff, who are continuing to collect information.

The gunman was identifed by sources to ABC News as Arif Uka, a Kosovo citizen from the northern town of Mitrovica.

“This is a devastating and a tragic event,” Kosovo Interior Minister Bajram Rexhepi said. “We are trying to find out was this something that was organized or what was the nature of the attack.”

"But I will not let myself be reduced to silence."
