NBC Reportedly Pulls Reporter Who Witnessed Child Deaths From Gaza
(Business Insider) – NBC News has pulled Ayman Mohyeldin from Gaza after the veteran journalist personally witnessed the death of four Palestinian boys.
“Mohyeldin’s reporting has been far more balanced and even-handed than the standard pro-Israel coverage that dominates establishment American press coverage; his reports have provided context to the conflict that is missing from most American reports and he avoids adopting Israeli government talking points as truth. As a result, neocon and ‘pro-Israel’ websites have repeatedly attacked him as a ‘Hamas spokesman’ and spouting ‘pro-Hamas rants’.”

(NY Times) – The decision to pull Mr. Mohyeldin off the story, after he witnessed an Israeli air attack that killed four Palestinian children and then posted remarks on Twitter about it, prompted a round of questions, and much criticism of NBC among Internet commenters. Some accused the network of reacting to pressure from the Israeli side of the conflict. Mr. Mohyeldin is an Egyptian-American who previously worked for the cable news channel Al Jazeera English.
Other commenters speculated that NBC might have felt that Mr. Mohyeldin showed too much empathy in his social media comments. At one point he wrote, “just spent 45 min see family relative after relative learn that their children have been killed in #Israeli shelling of #Gaza port #horror.”
When it removed Mr. Mohyeldin, NBC did not give a reason for its decision, which was first reported by the news sites TVNewser and The Intercept, other than unspecified security concerns.
Innocent and Gone: Israeli Strike on Gaza Kills Four Children by Ayman Mohyeldin and Paul Ziad Nassar
GAZA CITY (NBC News) – The terrible human toll from the nine-day Gaza conflict was laid bare Wednesday when four Palestinian boys from the same family were killed as they played football on a beach.
Three other children were wounded – one of them critically – in the attack, which appeared to be from Israeli naval shelling near the port area of Gaza City.
There were scenes of anguish at the nearby al-Shifa hospital as the parents of the victims learned of the attack. “My son! My son!” cried the mother of one of the boys.
The attack – and its heartrending aftermath – was witnessed by NBC News. Moments earlier, the boys were playing soccer with journalists on the beach.
The four victims were named as Ahed Atef Bakr and Zakaria Ahed Bakr, both 10 years old, Mohamed Ramez Bakr, 11, and Ismael Mohamed Bakr, 9.
Zakaria’s father rushed to the hospital after hearing of the attack only to learn that his son had been killed. “He was my only son … he died with his cousins, they all died together,” he told NBC News.
“We live by the coast. There was a headline on the news that four children were injured … so we went looking for the kids and we could not find them, so we came here to the hospital to look for them and we found them all, including my son … oh my God.”
‘Journalists!’ NBC Team Caught in Crossfire in East Jerusalem
JERUSALEM (NBC News) – Israeli police fired at crowd of Palestinian protesters and four journalists in east Jerusalem on Wednesday, including NBC News correspondent Ayman Mohyeldin’s team. The police fired rubber bullets and hurled stun grenades at the four who wore protective gear labelled “press” and shouted that they were journalists in Hebrew, English and Arabic. An NBC cameraman was bruised by shrapnel.
Clashes broke out in the Arab neighborhood in east Jerusalem after a Palestinian teen was kidnapped and killed. His badly burned body was found overnight. The cousin of a missing boy thought to be the slain teen blamed the killing on Israelis. “It’s a clear crime by settlers in revenge for the killing of the three,” he said, referring to the abduction and murder of three Israeli teens.

An Israeli security source told Reuters that it was suspected the youth had been kidnapped and killed, possibly in retribution for the earlier murders. However, the Jerusalem Post reported that police were investigating local family feuds and previous attempts to kidnap a relative of the murdered Arab boy.

(CNN) Jan. 16, 2009 – Earlier, when we caught the last bus from Egypt into Gaza, we spoke to Palestinian passengers, most of whom said they had been arrested in Egypt and abused by police before being deported. Their bitterness toward Egypt, particularly its president, Hosni Mubarak, and other Arab leaders over their perceived failure to provide support was echoed among others we spoke to.
This was matched by anger toward the United States, because most people know it supplies Israel with the warplanes bombarding them.
The attacks have badly affected Gaza’s electricity supply. The territory gets its power from Egypt, but lines have been knocked out by explosions, leaving connections intermittent in some areas. Water is also a problem, many areas now without any supply.

"I just saw a clip of a young Jewish student protesting for Palestinians and being beaten and taken away."Returning from Hebron Wednesday afternoon, I glanced outside my window, only to see miles and miles of blue and white. Today was Jerusalem Day, and a parade of thousands marched through the streets celebrating, as if in an orgy of nationalistic fervor, the 44th anniversary of the Israeli conquest of East Jerusalem.
What shocked me initially was how eerily monolithic the procession was: it seemed as though the ocean of Israeli flags was meant to blur all distinctions between old and young, boss and worker, women and men, settler and 48er. In light of the events of recent days, I sensed a strong political undertone beneath the cheers and yells of the ecstatic crowds.
Coming on the heels of Netanyahu’s defiant speech before Congress, it appeared to me that the marchers streaming down Sultan Suleiman St. that evening sought to echo their PM’s bold remarks, that all of Jerusalem was “theirs” forever.
